McInnis Makes His Move?

Perhaps the moment you've all been waiting for--given Scott McInnis' track record of expressing 'interest' in running for everything, from the U.S. Senate to Mesa County dogcatcher, we'll only fully believe it when the Secretary of State gets the papers. But no question there's intense jockeying going on behind the scenes in the GOP right now, as the Grand Junction Sentinel reports:
The battle for the Republican nomination for governor in 2010 could be a Western Slope affair, pitting former Congressman Scott McInnis against his onetime aide, Josh Penry.

McInnis, who retired from Congress in 2004 after six terms representing the 3rd District, is interested in the job, as is Penry, now the minority leader in the state Senate.

Dan Caplis For Senate?

5280 reports:
Talk-radio hosts might be well-known political figures, but can they turn their popularity among listeners into a successful political campaign?

Dan Caplis might soon try to figure that out. The veteran conservative radio personality, who co-hosts an afternoon show weekdays with liberal counterpart Craig Silverman on KHOW-AM, says he'd like to decide by early May whether to run as a Republican for the U.S. Senate.

He's already met with John Cornyn, the Texas senator who heads the National Republican Senatorial Committee, about a potential run. [rsb emphasis] The main factor now, he says, is whether his kids (11-year-old Joe and 8-year-old Caroline) would be able to withstand the rigors of their dad running for Senate.

GOP operative Shires tied to money-laundering gambling ring

The pattern emerging in the weird and sordid business life of Scott Shires points to two possible conclusions: He’s cornered the market on shifty accounting practices or this fellow has the worst luck in the world by attracting pretty shady clients.

The Denver Post reported Wednesday that Shires was indicted for aiding restaurateur Jeffrey Castardi on an alleged money-laundering scheme to hide an illegal gambling operation. Predictably, Shires denies any wrongdoing, claiming that he began to have second thoughts about his association with Castardi. “I said, ‘I can’t hang around this dude,’” Shires told the Post.

Shires, who has served as the registered agent for dozens of Republican political committees and 527s for more than a decade, has quite the colorful professional history.

Stone Barnstorms Colorado Seeking Wadhams Upset

As the Vail Daily reports:
Former Eagle County commissioner Tom Stone was not messing around when he decided to make a run at upending Dick Wadhams for the Colorado Republican Party Chair.

Since the former Eagle County Commissioner announced late last month that he was running, he's stayed busy stumping for votes, which will be cast by some 500 members of the Colorado Central Committee on March 21...

"Every day from about six in the morning 'til about eleven-thirty at night, I've been on the phone or on the roads constantly since I announced I was running," Stone said.

So far, the Gypsum resident has made trips to several Front Range communities to talk to members of the Central Committee, and Stone says the response has been positive so far.

Salazar taps Shafroth for fish, wildlife and parks deputy post at Interior

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced Tuesday afternoon that fourth-generation Colorado resident Will Shafroth, who ran unsuccessfully for Congress last summer, will be the department’s deputy assistant secretary for fish, wildlife and parks. A few weeks ago Salazar nominated another Colorado politician as Shafroth’s boss, naming former Senate candidate and one-time U.S. Attorney Tom Strickland as his assistant secretary for fish, wildlife and parks.

The announcement from Salazar’s office:

Salazar Names Land Conservation Leader Will Shafroth Deputy Assistant Secretary for Fish, Wildlife and Parks

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar has named Will Shafroth, a land conservationist executive and founding director of the Colorado Conservation Trust and Great Outdoors Colorado Trust Fund, as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Fish, Wildlife and Parks.

Ken Buck for...Wait, What?

Interesting scoop from something called The Holyoke Enterprise. We're guessing they don't even know what they just reported:
Starting early to strategize election wins in 2010, Phillips County Republicans gathered a large turnout at the annual Lincoln Day Soup, Salad and Pie Social Sunday, March 1...

...Also speaking to the Republican delegation were Weld County District Attorney Ken Buck, who will announce he's running for U.S. Senate in April [Pols emphasis]; and Cleve Tidwell, an exploratory gubernatorial candidate who plans to announce his intent to run for governor very soon.

We don't have any idea who the hell Cleve Tidwell is, let alone why he would run for Governor.

GOP mayor: State party chairman candidate is Eagle County’s Rush Limbaugh

If you ask Ron Wolfe, the Republican mayor of Avon, Tom Stone has played a major role in marginalizing his party in Eagle County, where there was a Democratic sweep in November and the GOP trails in voter registration for the first time in recent memory.

And as Republicans continue to take stock of their defeats nationally and locally, there’s debate over whether Stone, a Realtor and former county commissioner, would be a better GOP party chairman than Dick Wadhams.

“If anything, [Tom Stone is] the Rush Limbaugh of Eagle County,” Wolfe told the Colorado Independent Tuesday. “I don’t think Tom had a history here of working well with anyone who was anything but super-, super-conservative.

Penry for Governor? Um, No

Senate Minority Leader John Penry is apparently beginning to seriously engage in discussions about running for Governor, and may soon file paperwork to make it official. Penry is doing this quietly while he tries to gauge support for a potential run against Gov. Bill Ritter, and trying to keep this quiet is probably the smartest thing Penry has done in months.

Our prediction? Penry doesn't actually end up running for Governor in 2010. And here's why...
Penry has long been touted by Republicans as a "rising star" in the Party, but like many "rising stars" who have come before him (from both parties), Penry's just not ready to move from "rising" to actual "star.

If Kathy Hall said it....Face-the-State thinks it's good to go

It must be true.

Or apparently that is enough 'fact' for Face-the-State to launch into a speculative article "Could Curry be the next Buescher."

The tale turns on this ominous quote by oil and gas mouthpiece and known dissembler Kathy Hall:

According to Kathy Hall, western slope director for the Colorado Oil and Gas Association, Colorado has already seen a loss of about $3 billion in drilling activity since the new regulations passed last year. The economy of Curry's western slope district relies heavily on the energy industry.

"The drop in drilling translates into a loss of millions of dollars of severance tax revenues," said Hall.

Former Rep. Schaffer’s new pitch

If it sounded too good to be true when The Colorado Independent broke the story last week, a Denver news station has video of former U.S. Senate candidate Bob Schaffer pitching his wife’s new product: Coyote Gold margarita mix.

Check out the video here.

Schaffer, as you may know, had a rough time on the campaign trail last year, running against then-Congressman Mark Udall, D-Colo., and, as he said during campaign stops, the media. The silver lining, it seems, is that the campaign probably pales in comparison to his current “campaign” blitz.
