GOP senators lift hold on Salazar's top aide

Two Republican U.S. senators agreed Wednesday to lift their procedural roadblocks and, hours later, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar's right- hand man was confirmed by a unanimous Senate vote.

But the Republicans claimed victory, saying they had forced Salazar to reconsider his cancellation of oil and gas leases near national parks in Utah. The cancellation of the leases — issued during the last days of the Bush administration and which Salazar said were poorly considered — was the key motivation for Sens. Bob Bennett, R-Utah, and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, to place a hold on the confirmation of Interior veteran David Hayes as deputy secretary of the department.

Salazar is drilling home renewables' new power

WASHINGTON — In one of her earliest appearances before the Senate Natural Resources Committee, Gale Norton, President George W. Bush's first interior secretary, proclaimed in 2001 the need to "explore the entire smorgasbord of different options" when it came to domestic energy production.

But what was actually on the buffet was telling: Drilling off the coast of Florida, coal extraction in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Utah and exploring for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.

Now fast forward eight years, to Interior Secretary Ken Salazar's first appearance before the same Senate committee last week.

He laid out maps that showed wind-energy potential across the West; talked about tapping geothermal energy underlying states including Idaho and Colorado; and evoked the vision of a high-tech "super- electron highway" that will connect "renewable-energy zones" on public lands to homes in California or New Jersey.

Enviros want Obama’s Final Four to remain roadless

Environmentalists won’t allow President Obama to sit on the bench of sports escapism for even a minute without reminding him of his obligations to reject the Bush administration’s eight-year full-court press on America’s national forests.

In an ad campaign launched today to coincide with the first day of the NCAA’s Final Four basketball tournament – a tourney Obama playfully picked the winner of on ESPN Wednesday – the Pew Environment Group called on the president to uphold the hotly debated Roadless Area Conservation Rule.

“Jayhawks and cardinals play here. So do wildcats and wolverines. The road to the national championship? No, our national forests,” the television version intones.

Western Slope GOP caucus declares war on tweakers

Three Grand Junction Republican state lawmakers are standing their ground with a vow to fight to the end against meth, except Senate Minority Leader Josh Penry may want to reconsider the Alamo-inspired drug war battle cry. The 33-year-old politician could be collecting government retirement benefits before ever holding a victory parade — Colorado ranks eighth in the nation in per-capita methamphetamine use.

SB 231, which passed the Senate today, extends the Colorado Methamphetamine Task Force through 2014 from its planned sunset next year. Penry’s fellow co-sponsors state Reps. Steve King and Laura Bradford and Democratic Rep. Judy Solano from Aurora were touted in the press release this afternoon to promote the bill’s bipartisan sponsor bona fides.

Restoring Stem Cell Research - now and beyond

President Barack Obama has certainly had his plate full since he took office - the economy, children's health and the housing crisis, all have piled up at once. He continues to take bold action that will ensure the long-term stability of our economy.

And I am proud that he has acted on expanding embryonic stem cell research.

As a pro-science president, he has taken the first step in ensuring that the United States regains it preeminence in cutting-edge research by overturning the current restrictions on embryonic stem cell research. Finally, after eight years of roadblocks, millions of patients and their families now have hope for a cure.

State Dems re-elect director

The unanimous support for state Democratic Party Chairwoman Pat Waak on Sunday was a far cry from her first election to that position four years ago, when the upstart eked by a sitting chairman with just four votes.

The central committee's resounding change of heart as Waak sought a third term came as no surprise.

The Democrats control both state legislative chambers and the governor's seat, just graduated two of their own to U.S. Senate positions, carried the state for President Barack Obama and registered 240,000 new Democrats in the process.

Waak said she can provide some continuity as party leaders work to bring new voters into the fold, and she credited her team of county chairs for the successful run.

Democrats' party toasts gains statewide

CNN political analyst Paul Begala regaled a festive Colorado Democratic Party on Saturday night with jabs at George W. Bush and Rush Limbaugh, whom he challenged to run for president in 2012.

He cracked numerous jokes about Limbaugh, especially focusing on the conservative commentator's weight. Then, chiding Bush, he described a new swing set that President Barack Obama has installed for his daughters at the White House.

"It's so much better than the one that George W. used to play on," the former adviser to Bill Clinton said. He described Bush, who has returned to Texas, as "all hat and no cattle.

My lunch with Jared

Jared is happy. No that doesn't convey it accurately - he's on the bow of the Titanic, with his arms outstretched, on top of the world. I talked with him for over an hour and he is clearly loving every bit of his job.

So topic #1 was the economy. I asked him about taking the country further in debt, leaving that for future generations. Really interesting on his first point - that the fed can presently borrow long term (20 years) at 3 points. This is incredibly low. So any investment the government makes that has an ROI greater than 3 points will pay for itself.
