Monitor backs cops at DNC protest

An undercover officer did not instigate a confrontation with police and officers were justified in confronting dozens of protesters headed to the 16th Street Mall on the first day of the Democratic National Convention, Denver's independent police monitor said Monday.

A reported confrontation between Denver police Cmdr. Kris Kroncke and an undercover officer was not an attempt to inflame an already stressful situation, independent monitor Richard A. Rosenthal wrote in a letter to Taylor Pendergrass, staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado.

"There was no screaming, fighting or any other attempt to incite the crowd or police," Rosenthal wrote.

Colorado Senate seat up for grabs

It will be about money, connections and identity politics; about who you know at the highest echelons of Democratic power and at the party's base in far-flung counties.

Those are the things that will matter as Gov. Bill Ritter makes that rare decision in an executive's career: handing a U.S. Senate seat over to someone who doesn't have to earn a single vote.

But if winning the allegiance of hundreds of thousands of state voters in a general election is tough, winning the governor's appointment to the seat Ken Salazar will soon vacate won't be much easier, Democratic insiders say.

Tech problems forced Ritter to recite Invesco speech from memory

To give the biggest speech of his life, Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter had to work through some unexpected difficulties, the Denver Post reported Thursday.

Ritter's speech at Invesco Field last Thursday before thousands of Democratic National Convention delegates was subsequently panned by some as dull and uninspiring.

But as Ritter told the Post, technical problems forced Ritter to recite most of the address from memory.

“We look to the grit and determination of those who came before us,” said Udall, wearing a jacket and black bolo tie. “We know by their example that there’s no problem we can’t solve if we stick together.”

Reforming health care, helping military veterans, and protecting abortion rights are on U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette’s laundry list of needs, she told Democratic National Convention delegates in a speech Thursday afternoon at Invesco Field in Denver.

DeGette quoted Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech, delivered 45 years ago Thursday, during which he said “we…will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like water. "
