The Denver city attorney’s office dropped criminal charges Wednesday morning against a Code Pink demonstrator who was videotaped being slammed to the ground by a baton-wielding Denver Police officer during a protest at the Democratic National Convention, The Denver Post’s Howard Pankratz reports. Alicia Forrest, a 22-year-old Arizona resident, faced charges of interfering with police and could have been sentenced to a year in jail, her defense attorney said.

Forrest was “whisked away” by police after an officer ordered, “Back up, bitch,” and shoved her to the pavement in Denver’s Civic Center Park on Aug.

Beauprez: John Hickenlooper would have been unbeatable in 2010

In case you missed it, former Congressman Bob Beauprez, R-Colo., recently sat down with The Colorado Statesman for a wide-ranging interview that is definitely work reading in its entirety. What stood out at us, though, was his admission that Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper would have been an unbeatable Senate candidate had Gov. Bill Ritter selected him to succeed Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Colo., instead of Michael Bennet.

From the interview: “I don’t know, but I’m guessing John Hickenlooper has name ID that rivals the governor’s, maybe exceeds the governor’s. I’m guessing that John Hickenlooper has 4-to-1 favorable/unfavorables statewide. There isn’t enough money in the world to peel that down to 1-to-1 — to where you could maybe beat him.

Monitor backs cops at DNC protest

An undercover officer did not instigate a confrontation with police and officers were justified in confronting dozens of protesters headed to the 16th Street Mall on the first day of the Democratic National Convention, Denver's independent police monitor said Monday.

A reported confrontation between Denver police Cmdr. Kris Kroncke and an undercover officer was not an attempt to inflame an already stressful situation, independent monitor Richard A. Rosenthal wrote in a letter to Taylor Pendergrass, staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado.

"There was no screaming, fighting or any other attempt to incite the crowd or police," Rosenthal wrote.

Waak to whacked?

Lost in the results of the McCain-Obama poll that shows Obama with a slim five-point lead in Colorado was the decision by the Obama camp not to coordinate campaign efforts with the Colorado Dems, as reported in the Denver Post.

Sources have told the Inside Edge that at issue is who controls the money that the DNC raises for the presidential race in Colorado. And it could have implications for the top of the Democratic Party in Colorado.

Powerful or Pitiful: The Rocky Mountain News archives

The Rocky is pulling out the coverage of Denver's last Democratic National Convention, dusting it off because it's from July 1908, and putting it online for all to see day by day.

At time when 24 hours can take up a whole TV season just to explain, it's interesting to see that while there was a certain "quaintness" to coverage back then, that issues haven't changed that much over 100 years.

Post Publisher to DNC: No cows in Denver

We missed this story when it was published originally on May 19th in High Country News because frankly we don't find the publication very "newsy."  Thus we don't read it often.

But thanks to a Wally World reader, the story got pushed to our inbox, and finally, we read it today.

New DNC anti-McCain TV ad to appear on cable

A new Democratic National Committee ad that criticizes John McCain on Iraq will begin airing on cable TV in Colorado, the Colorado Democratic Party announced Tuesday.

The ad, entitled "100," will also be shown at Democratic organizational events around the state, a press release stated.

The ad begins by saying President Bush has talked about staying in Iraq for 50 years. It then has McCain add, “Maybe 100. That’d be fine with me.”
