It’s been an awesome week. A week where Lakewood began requiring that all paid escorts be registered and injected with tracking micro-chips. Or maybe that was cats. It's easy to get confused with so many good ideas coming out of our local and state governments these days.

It’s also a week in which we’ve learned that Colorado Democrats are fighting hard to change their image of being the party that is soft on crime. And they’re doing it by:

Trying to shut down a prison in Rifle.

Working to eliminate the death penalty.

Refusing to join the rest of the country in passing Jessica’s Law.

"I applaud the Colorado legislature for being one of only eight states to not pass tough legislation against child molesters," said one opponent of the law, singer Michael Jackson.

2008 Colorado election preview: State Senate races

By all accounts, the Democrats' five-seat majority in the Colorado State Senate is safe, but either party could gain a couple seats during this year's election.

The key Senate districts to watch are the 8th state Senate District, the 16th District, the 19th District, the 23rd District and the 26th District. Of those, two are open seats being relinquished by Republicans, one has a Republican incumbent, one has a Democratic incumbent, and one is being vacated by a Democrat.

Asked if he had heard of any other names of potential competitors to succeed outgoing Senate Majority Leader Ken Gordon (D-Denver), Shaffer said, "the answer to your question's ‘no.'"

Wiens predicts GOP keeps state Senate seats, might pick up SD-19

MINNEAPOLIS-Outgoing state Sen. Tom Wiens (R-Castle Rock) said Wednesday that he expects his party to hold onto -and even improve upon - their seats in the state Senate this November.

"I really don't think we would lose seats," Wiens said following a breakfast for the Colorado delegation to the Republican National Convention.

Wiens said Republicans could even pick up state Senate District 19, where state Sen. Sue Windels (D-Arvada) is term-limited.

Republican Libby Szabo faces Democrat Evie Hudak for the seat.
