Unions blast Colo. gov. for vetoing lockout bill

Workers said Wednesday the governor gave grocery chains an unfair advantage in contract talks by barring them from getting benefits if they're unable to work because of labor disputes.

In a lockout, an employer bars workers from their jobs during a labor dispute. Colorado's last lockout occurred in 1996 when employees of the King Soopers grocery chain went on strike and workers at Safeway were locked out.

Nurturing a Democrats West

President Barack Obama’s trips to Denver and phoenix this week show the West will continue to be a central focus for Democrats as the 2010 and 2012 elections approach, according to a report in The Hill.

From the article: “‘They’re making sure that all portions of the Obama coalition are carefully tended,’ said Larry Sabato, professor of politics at the University of Virginia. ‘Presidents lose re-election when they waste their term. You waste your term when you don’t use presidential travel wisely.’”

Floyd Ciruli, a Denver-based pollster quoted in the article, said Colorado, in particular, will be a crucial test of the West’s new Democratic tilt, with the seats of U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., Gov. Bill Ritter and Congresswoman Betsy Markey, D-Colo., up for grabs next year.

Latest Ciruli poll shows Udall, Obama winning Western Slope, statewide

Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Mark Udall is up 7 points over Republican Bob Schaffer in a poll released Wednesday by Ciruli Associates - including a 21-point Udall lead on the Western Slope.

The poll also showed Barack Obama leading John McCain up by a single point in Colorado, 44 percent to 43 percent.

The survey was taken "just prior" to the first presidential debate on Sept. 26 -- meaning it was also conducted before the U.S. House rejected a $700 billion financial bailout package on Monday.

How the West was won by the Democrats

The Washington Times today has a nicely done piece on how the West has gone to the Democrats.

"They tend to be independent," says Denver pollster Floyd Ciruli about Rocky Mountain voters in the Times article, "and if you have a reasonably attractive candidate and a national trend for the Democrats, there's no reason you can't elect Democrats."
