Bill saves 2 million U.S. acres as wild

The U.S. House of Representatives — on its second try — passed a bill to preserve 2 million acres as wilderness in nine states, including 315,000 acres in Colorado.

On March 11, the bill failed, by two votes, to get a necessary two-thirds approval for a procedural vote.

Republican Reps. Doug Lamborn of Colorado Springs and Mike Coffman of Aurora voted against the bill then and voted against it Wednesday.

The two lawmakers said they objected to the sweeping nature of the legislation — a collection of 170 different bills — and its estimated $10 billion price tag.

"When there is a $9 billion maintenance backlog on the Park Service land that we already have, why are we spending $10 billion that we will have to borrow to acquire even more land?" Coffman said in a statement.

Shinseki: Long-awaited VA hospital will open at Fitzsimons in 2013

(Illustration/fitzscience.com)

After a decade of delays and budget shortfalls, Colorado will finally get the brand-new, stand-alone VA hospital veterans organizations have wanted, U.S. Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki announced Wednesday morning. Construction will begin this spring on a 200-bed medical center set to open in the summer of 2013 on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Shinseki said.

The new facility will have a 30-bed, state-of-the art spinal injury center, Shinseki said, meaning nearly 1,000 veterans with spinal-cord injuries in the Rocky Mountain region won’t have to travel to the West Coast for treatment.

“Now we can fulfill the promises that we made to our veterans,” said U.

Ritter looks to repair Pueblo rift

Gov. Bill Ritter heads to Pueblo today for the first time since the tongue-lashing he received in January, in part over his pick for the U.S. Senate.

Ritter will speak tonight at the Pueblo County Democrats' annual St. Patrick's Day Dinner.

And on Saturday he has two events in Pueblo, a bill signing and a job fair for a wind tower plant scheduled to open later this year.

"It is essential on Gov. Ritter's part to be there," said Sen. Abel Tapia, D-Pueblo. "I think the governor has heard loud and clear the cries of Pueblo Democrats."

Ritter's spokesman, Evan Dreyer, said Pueblo is important to the governor.

My sit-down with Representative Salazar

Note: This interview comes from our D.C. bureau where your intrepid reporter interviewed Representative Salazar at his office here in Washington, D.C. No expense is too great to bring our readers these interviews. (Plus I was in D.C. for a trade show.)

John Salazar exudes quiet competence. Yes there's his policies, his outlook, his reasons for being there and that matters too. But throughout the conversation you have someone who is clearly competent and yet makes no big deal of his knowledge and success. And in fact downplays it. This is a very common trait in very effective people in most jobs - including politics.

Democrats' party toasts gains statewide

CNN political analyst Paul Begala regaled a festive Colorado Democratic Party on Saturday night with jabs at George W. Bush and Rush Limbaugh, whom he challenged to run for president in 2012.

He cracked numerous jokes about Limbaugh, especially focusing on the conservative commentator's weight. Then, chiding Bush, he described a new swing set that President Barack Obama has installed for his daughters at the White House.

"It's so much better than the one that George W. used to play on," the former adviser to Bill Clinton said. He described Bush, who has returned to Texas, as "all hat and no cattle.

Amid economic crisis, Polis hosts taxpayer-funded staff retreat

Fellow Democrat Rep. John Salazar won't be hosting a retreat this year, nor will Republican Congressmen Mike Coffman and Doug Lamborn. Similarly, U.S. Senators Michael Bennet and Mark Udall have no plans for retreats this year.

“We’re too busy to schedule one right now,” said Tyler Houlton, Coffman’s press secretary.

The remaining three Democrat members of Colorado's House delegation, including Diana DeGette, Ed Perlmutter, and Betsy Markey, say they don’t plan to have their retreats until August when Congress is out of session.

“We are still hiring all of our staff,” said Markey’s district director Ken Bennett, who added that the last time Markey was in town she did bring three staffers with her.

If Kathy Hall said it....Face-the-State thinks it's good to go

It must be true.

Or apparently that is enough 'fact' for Face-the-State to launch into a speculative article "Could Curry be the next Buescher."

The tale turns on this ominous quote by oil and gas mouthpiece and known dissembler Kathy Hall:

According to Kathy Hall, western slope director for the Colorado Oil and Gas Association, Colorado has already seen a loss of about $3 billion in drilling activity since the new regulations passed last year. The economy of Curry's western slope district relies heavily on the energy industry.

"The drop in drilling translates into a loss of millions of dollars of severance tax revenues," said Hall.

Colo. delegation comments on Obama address

"Tonight President Obama delivered a sobering and honest assessment of our nation's economy. These are troubling times, but the President put forth a bold plan for rebuilding our economy and getting our country back on track."

Sen. Mark Udall, D-Eldorado Springs

"Tonight, President Obama laid out a blueprint for America's future - a blueprint that will help create jobs, ease the flow of credit, keep American families in their homes, and invest in areas like energy, health care and education that will grow our economy. But it is also a blueprint that acknowledges our responsibility to future generations by reigning in runaway spending and crushing public debt.
