5280 Loves It Some Freshman Legislators

A few weeks late for Valentines day, but last Tuesday 5280 sent the literary equivalent of hand-delivered red carnations to four of its favorite freshman legislative crushes.

From the State Senate, the magazine noted Democrat Senator Rollie Heath's involvement with the repeal of Arveschoug-Bird - otherwise known as the ratchet effect. Senator Joyce Foster felt the love for her work reaching across the aisle to pass "a controversial pro-Israel resolution," winning near-unanimous approval. Republican Senator Mark Scheffel somehow managed to get a proposal to kill the state's business personal property tax passed out of committee, which certainly endears him to 5280 readers more than the

Mideast debate gets Senate fired up

A protester was removed from the Senate gallery Monday for yelling at lawmakers after they approved a resolution expressing support for Israel in its fight against Palestinian militants, as well as for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.

But the real fireworks were still to come. The spark that lit the Senate's flame was freshman Sen. Linda Newell's "no" vote on the Israel resolution, one of two cast against it.

"I voted no," Newell, D-Littleton, explained later, "because I was elected to do the state's business. I believe resolutions like this take us away from that."

Earlier in the day, however, the Senate voted 29-5 in favor of a resolution "Concerning a Season of Nonviolence" offered by Newell that commemorates Mohandas Gandhi and the Rev.

Senate Dems name 2009 committee chairs

The Colorado Senate Democrats announced chair assignments for 10 state Senate committees on Thursday and seven of the 10 appointed Senators are new to the post.

State Sens. Jim Isgar (D-Durango), Paula Sandoval (D-Denver), and Jennifer Veiga (D-Denver) are the only committee chairs who will remain in their positions for next year.
