2008 Colorado election preview: State House races

In a year that looks pretty good for Democrats, Republicans will be hard-pressed to make a big dent in the Democrats' 15-seat majority in the state House of Representatives.

But that doesn't mean all is lost for the GOP. House District 40 looks virtually certain to return to the Republicans, one year after Debbie Stafford turned rogue and delivered it into Democrats' hands.

There also appear to be a number of close races shaping up, the most interesting of these being House Districts 25, 27, 29, 30, 31, 37, and 56.

Gallegos misses petition deadline; Vigil turns in signatures

[img_assist|nid=1194|title=Gallegos|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=109|height=153]State Rep. Rafael Gallegos (D-Antonio) won't be on the August primary ballot for House District 62, as he missed the Thursday deadline to turn in petition signatures to the Colorado Secretary of State's office.

HD-62 Democratic candidate Ed Vigil, a Costilla County commissioner, did turn in petition signatures on Wednesday, according to a Secretary of State spokesperson. If his signatures are verified, he'll face Rocky White in the August Democratic primary.

Gallegos fails to make ballot in HD-62 assembly upset

[img_assist|nid=1194|title=Gallegos|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=150|height=211]In a surprising upset, state Rep. Rafael Gallegos (D-Antonio) fell three votes short of making the August primary ballot during the HD-62 Democratic assembly Friday in Colorado Springs.

Rocky White walloped both Gallegos and Ed Vigil in the assembly vote, capturing 32 of the 58 assembly votes. Gallegos won 14 votes; Vigil received 12.

Gallegos, in his second term as a state House member, can still petition onto the ballot. Vigil is a Costilla County commissioner.
