Supreme Court nominee's quote sparks flap

As talk radio and the blogosphere blew up with claims that Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor is a racist, scholars of ethnicity and politics called for a quick truce.

A one-time poor choice of words on Sotomayor's part, perhaps, was their view. The New York appellate judge said in a 2001 speech, "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

But Sotomayor's other, voluminous words — even in the same controversial speech — scream moderation, said academic experts who are following the debate.

Wadhams Grotesquely Overreaches, "Phony Soldiers" Redux?

You've been reading about the scandal surrounding an apparently impostor Marine who managed to insert himself into a number of campaign-related events last year, mostly (but not exclusively, we'll get to that) on behalf of Democrats.

There's no question that the impostor in question, one Rick Strandlof, enormously embarrassed anyone who was conned by him--though he by all reports never actually worked for any Colorado campaign last year, he did volunteer to host receptions for candidates, and appeared in a 527 TV spot targeted at the Senate race.

Whatever the facts of this scandal ultimately shake out to be, we've seen nothing to indicate that anyone else, particularly other veterans associated with the organization Strandlof ran, were similarly misrepresenting themselves.

Q&A;: Michael Steele, chairman of the Republican National Committee

Michael Steele, the recently elected chairman of the Republican National Committee, hasn't exactly had an easy first couple months on the job.

He drew criticism from prominent Republicans over his comments to a magazine that abortion is an "individual choice" before clarifying that he is a staunch foe of abortion. He called Rush Limbaugh's radio show "incendiary" and "ugly," which drew swift reaction from Limbaugh fans.

Steele, who spoke to Colorado Republicans in a packed hotel ballroom Friday night, even joked about his bumpy start as chairman, telling the crowd he's a guy who knows how to learn from his mistakes.

"You cannot please everyone," Steele said.

My sit-down with Representative Salazar

Note: This interview comes from our D.C. bureau where your intrepid reporter interviewed Representative Salazar at his office here in Washington, D.C. No expense is too great to bring our readers these interviews. (Plus I was in D.C. for a trade show.)

John Salazar exudes quiet competence. Yes there's his policies, his outlook, his reasons for being there and that matters too. But throughout the conversation you have someone who is clearly competent and yet makes no big deal of his knowledge and success. And in fact downplays it. This is a very common trait in very effective people in most jobs - including politics.

Democrats' party toasts gains statewide

CNN political analyst Paul Begala regaled a festive Colorado Democratic Party on Saturday night with jabs at George W. Bush and Rush Limbaugh, whom he challenged to run for president in 2012.

He cracked numerous jokes about Limbaugh, especially focusing on the conservative commentator's weight. Then, chiding Bush, he described a new swing set that President Barack Obama has installed for his daughters at the White House.

"It's so much better than the one that George W. used to play on," the former adviser to Bill Clinton said. He described Bush, who has returned to Texas, as "all hat and no cattle.

RNC Chairman Kisses Limbaugh's Ring

Politico reports:
Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele says he has reached out to Rush Limbaugh to tell him he meant no offense when he referred to the popular conservative radio host as an "entertainer" whose show can be "incendiary."

"My intent was not to go after Rush - I have enormous respect for Rush Limbaugh," Steele said in a telephone interview. "I was maybe a little bit inarticulate. ... There was no attempt on my part to diminish his voice or his leadership."

The dust-up comes at a time when top Democrats are trying to make Limbaugh the face of the Republican Party, in part by using ads funded by labor.

Tancredo: Jindal politically dead; Grover Norquist should be jailed

At CPAC, the Conservative Political Action Conference, which is being held in D.C. this week, former Rep. Tom Tancredo joined the fireworks brigade by brushing off party leader Rush Limbaugh and blasting GOP leading light Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal.

Later, at a meeting of the Young Americans for Western Civilization, Tancredo told The Washington Independent’s David Weigel that “Gang of Five” neocon and anti-tax champion Grover Norquist should be jailed for advancing the cause of Muslim terrorism at the highest levels of U.S. government.

Think Progress has the super close-up video of firebrand Tancredo on Jindal:

TP: [Jindal] has gotten some flack for his performance on the response to Obama.

Penry's Shame

If there were ever a time in the Republican Party for a Sister Souljah moment, this is it.

With Schultheis and Renfroe serving as the local public face of the party and Rush Limbaugh as the national head of the Republican state, the party has gone completely off the rails. Once known for his death grip on the message, Dick Wadhams seems to have been forcibly retired in all but title as the puppets of industry and the religious right have moved front-and-center.

There's not much Penry can do about Limbaugh, but he is the guy who theoretically controls the message of his party within the State Senate.

Moderate Republicans vs. Militant Conservatives

The New York Times breaks it down, Obama Gains G.O.P Support from Governors
President Obama must wish governors could vote in Congress: While just three of the 219 Republican lawmakers backed the $787 billion economic recovery plan that he is signing into law on Tuesday, that trifling total would have been several times greater if support among the 22 Republican state executives counted.

The contrast reflects the two faces of the Republican Party these days.

Leaderless after losing the White House, the party is mostly defined by its Congressional wing, which flaunted its anti-spending ideology in opposing the stimulus package. That militancy drew the mockery of late-night television comics, but the praise of conservative talk-show stars and the party faithful.
