The bill, which has already passed the state Senate, advanced on a party-line vote after testimony from opponents, who said the measure unfairly extends special rights to gay couples and defies the will of state voters, who passed an amendment banning gay marriage in 2006. Supporters called it the right thing to do and said the benefits to the state outweigh anticipated costs.

Udall: Point man in the Obama revolution

Colorado freshman Sen. and Deputy Whip Mark Udall is a pivotal figure in the intended Obama revolution, according to a profile fronting today’s Congressional Quarterly. Udall’s tall-order task is to help Obama succeed where Ronald Reagan failed by getting the record-breaking number of majority party newcomers in the senate to support the president’s agenda without alienating the moderate voters who elected them.

The list of newcomers Udall is tasked with wrangling includes two fellow Democrats — the other senator from Colorado, Michael Bennet, Interior Secretary Ken Salazar’s replacement; and Udall’s first cousin, Tom, from New Mexico.

Although Mark Begich of Alaska is the only freshman Democrat from a state that voted for Republican John McCain in November, five of the new Democratic senators were elected in states carried by George W.

The Beauty of Self-Parody: How the CO Senate Republicans write their own snark

Of late its been difficult to add snark to the Senate Republican's once, twice, sometimes three times a day, news releases all with the same message: Senate Republicans lose another key vote.

So I guess it's time to change up the message and go on the attack, according to a story in the Rocky Mountain News:

Ritter is one of four Democratic governors invited to a Democratic Congressional retreat in Williamsburg, Va.

"I hope you will reconsider your decision to support the so-called stimulus package and, more importantly, your decision to attend - and thus endorse - this junket," Senate Republicans wrote in a letter initiated by Sen.

Penry promises rough road for FASTER transportation bill

Not sounding quite as conciliatory as his state Senate Republican colleague Al White, R-Hayden, minority leader Josh Penry, R-Grand Junction, told the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel Tuesday he’ll do everything in his power to slow down FASTER.

That’s the name of a proposal by Sen. Dan Gibbs, D-Silverthorne, to up vehicle registration fees $32 a year to raise more than $200 million for road and bridge fixes around the state. FASTER stands for Funding Advancement for Surface Transportation and Economic Recovery.

SB 108 passed out of committee on a 6-4 party-line vote Tuesday and will now be debated by the full Senate.

Penry told the Daily Sentinel the battle is shaping up because Democrats have refused to accept any compromises offered by Republicans to reduce the fees in a time of economic hardship.
