Senate votes no on Gitmo

WASHINGTON — The Senate on Wednesday resoundingly rejected an effort to spend $80 million to close the Guantanamo Bay prison and relocate the terrorism suspects, possibly to U.S. prisons.

Considered a setback for President Barack Obama and his pledge to close the prison by January, the vote ended a day of crossed signals and Democratic infighting, including a dust-up between California Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Colorado lawmakers.

The future of the detention facility at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, has Democrats increasingly on the defensive over the fates of the 240 terrorism suspects detained there.

In a floor speech before Wednesday's 90-7 Senate vote, Feinstein said she knew of one federal facility

Credit-card reform, behind the scenes

WASHINGTON — The Senate on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved a credit-card holders protection act — a version of an idea first introduced in the House more than four years ago by then-Rep. Mark Udall.

The bill that passed the Senate — and which will be reconciled with a House version this week — clamps down on the freedom of banks and credit-card companies to sharply increase rates even on consumers with good credit.

Sen. Udall, a Democrat from Eldorado Springs, hatched the idea in 2005 after watching a staff member's experience with a credit-card company that boosted his interest rate to 21 percent even though he had never missed a payment.

Wadhams Grotesquely Overreaches, "Phony Soldiers" Redux?

You've been reading about the scandal surrounding an apparently impostor Marine who managed to insert himself into a number of campaign-related events last year, mostly (but not exclusively, we'll get to that) on behalf of Democrats.

There's no question that the impostor in question, one Rick Strandlof, enormously embarrassed anyone who was conned by him--though he by all reports never actually worked for any Colorado campaign last year, he did volunteer to host receptions for candidates, and appeared in a 527 TV spot targeted at the Senate race.

Whatever the facts of this scandal ultimately shake out to be, we've seen nothing to indicate that anyone else, particularly other veterans associated with the organization Strandlof ran, were similarly misrepresenting themselves.

Inauguration tickets given to lucky few

Members of Colorado's congressional delegation on Monday started to receive their allotments of nearly 2,200 inaugural tickets and began distributing them to both the lucky and well-connected.

But how many of the recipients are staffers, family members, business associates, campaign donors or in-state residents is almost entirely unknown. While aides to President-elect Barack Obama have pledged inaugural transparency, the delegation isn't talking.

All nine of Colorado's elected officials declined a request from The Denver Post to disclose the names of ticket recipients. The seven Democrats in the delegation also passed on providing breakdowns of tickets distributed to family, friends and campaign donors.

DSCC to pull out of Colorado by next Tuesday

In a sign national Democrats are confident about Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Mark Udall's chances on Nov. 4, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee will stop its television advertising in Colorado by Tuesday, the Denver Post reported Wednesday.

The DSCC, which has spent nearly $4.6 million on advertising in support of Udall against Republican opponent Bob Schaffer, will focus instead on U.S. Senate races in other states, according to the Post.

Trujillo named Udall campaign spokesperson

Tara Trujillo, who's been Mark Udall's congressional communications director, was named Udall's U.S. Senate campaign spokesperson Wednesday.

Trujillo will take over the day-to-day media requests and scheduling for the campaign from campaign communications director Taylor West. She's taking a leave of absence from her congressional position to work with the campaign, a press release stated.

Trujillo's hiring will allow West to focus on larger issues within the campaign, West said.
