Wiens predicts GOP keeps state Senate seats, might pick up SD-19

MINNEAPOLIS-Outgoing state Sen. Tom Wiens (R-Castle Rock) said Wednesday that he expects his party to hold onto -and even improve upon - their seats in the state Senate this November.

"I really don't think we would lose seats," Wiens said following a breakfast for the Colorado delegation to the Republican National Convention.

Wiens said Republicans could even pick up state Senate District 19, where state Sen. Sue Windels (D-Arvada) is term-limited.

Republican Libby Szabo faces Democrat Evie Hudak for the seat.

Wiens told PolitickerCO.com on Thursday that he hasn't decided whether to run for governor in two years - but he added that leaving the senate now would help his chances if he does decide to run.

Leadville Mayor Says Lake County Commissioners Held Illegal Meetings About Tunnel

Leadville Mayor Bud Elliott, who's running for the Lake County Commission, accused the current commissioners Wednesday of holding secret meetings about how to respond to 1 billion gallons of toxic water trapped in a drainage tunnel near Leadville.

The three county commissioners, Mike Hickman, Ken Olsen, and Carl Schaefer, announced a state of emergency during a Feb. 13 public meeting, citing fears that rising water pressure in the Leadville Mine Drainage Tunnel could cause a blowout, flooding homes and businesses below.
