Ritter vetoes labor measure

Gov. Bill Ritter on Tuesday issued a late-in-the-day veto of legislation that would have favored grocery store workers in ongoing negotiations over their union contracts with Colorado's major supermarket chains.

In his veto message, Ritter criticized the timing of House Bill 1170.

Grocery store chains and the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 7 are trying to hammer out a contract by May 30, although negotiations could be extended. The legislation would have taken effect July 1.

"The parties to these negotiations have been working hard for several months to try to reach an agreement," Ritter wrote. "I believe it is ill-advised and counterproductive to enact legislation that materially impacts the relative bargaining position of parties in the midst of ongoing negotiations.

Denver Post Fails to Read the Denver Post

Apparently the Denver Post Editorial Board neglected to put any effort whatsoever into their latest anti-union rant today (Denver Post, http://www.denverpost.com/opin... ).

While the Denver Post's news section actually reported the substantive parts of House Bill 1170 correctly (Jessica Fender, http://www.denverpost.com/news... ), the Denver Post later ignored the facts or any other reporting on House Bill 1170, and proceeded to hammer out the usual anti-union falsehoods without any actual fact-checking or well, actual editing.

Now for those of us who have been following this bill closely, and have actually attended the hearings and read the actual bill and amendments, we know better.

The Denver Post also apparently failed to read the Associated Press or the article on the Denver Channel.
