Good Luck with That Reelection Thing, Walt

Within hours of Obama's speech giving strong support for the House Bill on health care reform, and with the endorsement of the bill by both the American Medical Association and the AARP, Congressman Walt Minnick announces he will vote against it.

“Over the last several months, I have met with thousands of constituents from all over Idaho’s First Congressional District. They are gravely concerned about the economy, about job security, and about the kinds of opportunities their children and grandchildren will have to make a better life.

“Like most of them, I believe that cutting down the cost of health care is one important step we can take in moving our economy forward.

New Pithy Phrases/Saying for Upper Left Rail

(seriously, many of those were from the Bush era - time to update, guys)

Most of the time Democrats are right on almost everything, except the best martinis at clubhouses on golf courses.

Jesus wasn't a Democrat because Democrats hadn't been invented yet but he whipped out some serious whoopass on the Republicans changing money in the temple.

I expect that in the bathroom at the White House, there is a hidden room with highly trained animal behaviorists and technicians who immediately enter and capture the unicorns after President Obama has taken a dump.  read more »

Election results around the state?

Idaho Falls has 2 contested races we're watching closely: Ida Hardcastle and Karen Cornwell were both challenged by candidates about as retrograde as Lerch Loertscher and No-no-nononi. These morons attacked because of city-passed childcare standards (after the (R)-dominated state legislature said it was up to local gov'ts to do so), and because our city actually has built up savings enough to pay cash for things like fire engines and road projects, rather than running levys and property tax increases.

Yes, the hyper-conservatives (headed by Pugsley AdamsLarry Lyon) attacked them for being fiscally conservative and not running a deficit. Wrap your brain around THAT one.

Please Vote Today, Idaho, Please Vote!

Although he's certainly drawn plenty of my wrath and disdain, indeed, I find him repellent in many ways, there is no other choice for Idahoans if they even want a small piece of the hope pie. Vote for Walt Minnick today. I know, I know, he's sold out many of his supporters but he's the best we've got here in the Gem state.

Please, put aside the deep seated ideological values that fuel your engine of caring and desire and think pragmatically and if Walt loses today then count on Idaho being plunged, once again, back into the Dark Ages and it's only barely begun to climb out.  read more »

AARP: ‘Idaho on crash course with health care disaster’

And I betcha given the chance Idaho Republicans would 'opt out' of the public option. While the wonk in me hopes they do, it ain't gonna help these victims of Republican policy makers at the state level. Via Betsy:

While Idaho’s part-time employees face massive health care premium increases, state retirees are bracing to lose their state health care in the coming months, all as programs and services providing a critical safety net continue to be cut. AARP says it’s a combination that spells health care disaster for many Idaho residents and the Association is calling on lawmakers to address it.

“It doesn’t make any sense to pull the rug out from underneath Idaho’s part-time state employees and retirees, while continuing to weaken the programs in the community where people turn in times of crisis,” said Jim Wordelman, AARP Idaho State Director.

Franken Amendment About Tax Dollar Accountability

Almost three weeks ago I wrote about the Idaho senators' shameful vote on the Franken Amendment, carefully attentive to avoid an overreaching headline. Fortunately the traditional media in Idaho, Kevin Richert, took note of the issue and confronted the Idaho senators on their vote. Unfortunately Richert framed the issue as to whether Idaho's senators were "pro-rape", giving them a pass, rather than investigating and disclosing the reasons underlying the Franken Amendment.

The victim in this case started the Jamie Leigh Foundation to correct the abuses by government contractors in foreign jurisdictions and the inherent unequal bargaining positions between an employer and employee in those circumstances:

Millions of Americans give up their constitutional rights to a trial by jury on a daily basis when signing employment contracts, buying a house, purchasing a cell phone, renting a car, applying for a credit card etc.  read more »

City Hall has disenfranchised voters in Boise – TJ Thomson calls for immediate corrections

Early this week, The City of Boise sent letters to over 3,000 registered voters who live in 10 consolidated polling districts. The city included with each letter an unsolicited absentee ballot request form. According to the Boise Weekly, “Deput y City Clerk Wendy Burrows-Johnson said in September that they consolidate precincts—mainly combining ones within city limits with precincts that straddle city and county lines—in order to save money.” However, rather than sending only letters to these precincts notifying voters of the change in their voting location, which is a great idea, they sent unsolicited ballot requests to every voter in the affected precincts.

Senator Risch Participates in Medicare, But Against the Public Option

The junior senator from Idaho is the thirteenth (13th) richest in Congress, enjoys some fine federal benefits, including health care insurance, AND collects his medicare benefits. Medicare is a government-funded; government-administered single-payer health care system. That's not even proposed in the current health care reform debate to cover the uninsured. Yet he's adamantly opposed to "to government-run health care" which includes opposition to the public option. To gain his support, "any proposed health care bill must control costs while at the same time protect patients." According to the CBO the public option will reduce the deficit and come in under Obama's ceiling of $900 billion. Not only that its popular almost everywhere. And if Medicare is good enough to protect the senator then such government program should be good enough to protect the rest of us, particularly those 47 million who lack any insurance at all.  read more »

Cause Found for Obama Derangement Syndrome

As Digby points out, somebody needs to tell Glenn Beck that proof has been found that Obama is actually trying to kill Republicans.

Republican men nationwide may have experienced a drop in testosterone levels the night Barack Obama was elected president, according to the results of a small study that found another link between testosterone and men's moods.

By taking multiple saliva samples from 183 young men and women on election night, researchers found that the testosterone levels of men who voted for John McCain or Robert Barr dropped sharply 40 minutes after Obama was announced the winner.

Low testosterone levels in men are linked to increased risk of premature death.  read more »

Someone Get Me A Ladder!

This is effing disturbing. So imagine you are a guy and you are standing in a field of flax. I don't actually know what flax is but it sounds fieldish. Anyhow you are standing in a field of flax and a gentle summer breeze warms the rosy cheeks of you and your 50 foot tall girlfriend. You check your watch, has it been 100 minutes?  read more »
