Election results around the state?

Idaho Falls has 2 contested races we're watching closely: Ida Hardcastle and Karen Cornwell were both challenged by candidates about as retrograde as Lerch Loertscher and No-no-nononi. These morons attacked because of city-passed childcare standards (after the (R)-dominated state legislature said it was up to local gov'ts to do so), and because our city actually has built up savings enough to pay cash for things like fire engines and road projects, rather than running levys and property tax increases.

Yes, the hyper-conservatives (headed by Pugsley AdamsLarry Lyon) attacked them for being fiscally conservative and not running a deficit. Wrap your brain around THAT one.

Pocatello Grapples with Gay Clergy Issue

Small towns can be remarkably resistant to change.

New ideas that rock the foundation of long established cues, values, morays, and perceptions are not easily tolerated.

Pocatello is no exception.

Some have said that the gate City has never progressed past the 1950s, which is the reason for the area's lack of economic growth when compared to cities of similar size.  read more »

Idaho State University: Promising Research Gem, Fantasy, or Oppressive Ayatollah Regime?

The rhetoric and debate has gone slightly beyond a feverish pitch in Pocatello.

Observers wonder what will happen next.

43rd State Blues host Serephin spoke of this heat in his entry: Controversy being engineered at Idaho State University. Since then, the flames have gotten worse. Professor of Civil Engineering Habib Sadid spoke out in the comments section under a September 4, Idaho State Journal story called: ISU faculty very angry, very frustrated with Vailas administration:

In Khomeini’s regime is Iran, there was a judge who used to execute anyone opposing the government’s policies without trial.

MadAsHellDoctors.com holds health care rally in Pocatello

On September 8, 2009 a group of dedicated Oregon physicians took the message of Universal Health Care "on the road" in a wrapped and branded Motor Home headed for Washington D.C. Theeir cross-country mission: to stop in big cities and whistle stops alike, holding rallies for Single Payer Health Care and conducting pre-booked, local and national media appearances. Their message: caravan with them to Washington and help make a public demonstration of support for Single Payer Health Care that will be heard around the world.

This video (15:20 running time) was from their stop Saturday morning, September 12th in Pocatello (from Idaho Falls the night before).

We Can't Afford To Wait/Health Care Now national video includes Pocatello professor

A few minutes ago on Daily Kos, in their "Late Afternoon/Early Evening Open Thread" (posted by former Idahoan and all-around wonderful lady mcjoan), I watched a YouTube video produced by MoveOn.Org and the band R.E.M. titled "We Can't Afford To Wait".

The video highlights people from all across the country holding personal signs explaining why they can't afford to wait for health care reform. One of the sign holders, at approximately 3 minutes and 29 seconds, is Tim Frazier, long-time Mass Communication professor at Idaho State University in Pocatello. His sign says, "My mother can't afford to wait -- Alzheimer's -- diagnosed 2008 -- $6,500/month.

Spud State Blog Rundown 8/28/09

Reality is a crutch for people who do not have access to a copy of Photoshop.

  • Treasured Valley: Friday’s politics brief
In case you missed it yesterday, perpetual candidate for Governor/Senate/Representative Rex Rammell opened mouth, inserted foot, hence creating today’s slew of posts from both the media and local blogs.
  • The Political Game: Goodnight, Uncle Teddy
"Those of us who loved him and who take him to his rest today, pray that what he was to us and what he wished for others will some day come to pass for all the world."
  • NewWest Boise: Crapo, Simpson, Risch and Otter Repudiate Rammell Remarks
The day after calls to the Idaho congressional delegation from columnists, bloggers, and constituents to respond to Rex Rammell’s statement about buying an “Obama tag” during a speech about wolf hunting tags, they have.

Teabaggin' Safari

If anyone showed up in Pocatello for the wingnuts' "Teabagging Party", they must have only stayed for about 20 minutes. When I drove by Poky's City Hall parking lot earlier this afternoon, there wasn't one sign-holding soul. I guess they all went home early to teabag each other.

Lets go protestin' now
The wingnuts are all learning how
Come on go Teabaggin' Par-ty
(come on go Teabaggin' Par-ty...)

Early in the morning, Rethugs crawlin' out
Ron Paulies will be coming along
They're loading up their woodies
With their teabags out
And headin' out singing their song

Come on (Teabag!) baby wait and see (Teabaggin' Safari)
Yes they're gonna (Teabag!) take you protestin' (Teabaggin' Safari)
