On Nuclear Disarmament for Iowa

On Nuclear Disarmament for Iowa

by Paul Deaton

When Dr. Helen Caldicott moved from Australia to the United States, she became what Massachusetts Senator Edward M. Kennedy called, “the First Lady of the Nuclear Freeze Movement in the 1980s.” Less well known is that Dr. Caldicott traveled around Iowa with Tom Harkin during his first campaign for election to the United States Senate in 1984, so she has an Iowa connection. When speaking in Iowa and elsewhere, her tactic was to scare the daylights out of her audience with a graphic description of the medical consequences of nuclear war. At times, she would leave the audience in tears and then recruit them to the cause.

Sarah Palin Supports the Local Community Radio Act for Iowa

Sorry, we have no idea if Sarah Palin has ever even heard of the Local Community Radio Act - our title today serves as a comment on the broken media's obsession with Sarah Palin, and could also be viewed as a shameless manipulation on our part to get you to click on Blog for Iowa and read about a really good thing for people that is happening in Congress right now,  the Local Community Radio Act, that continues to move quickly through Congress!

Today, November 19 at 10 AM, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, & Transportation will vote on the bill (S.

Meet Francis Thicke - Progressive Democrat for Iowa Agriculture Secretary

Meet Francis Thicke - Progressive Democrat for Iowa Agriculture Secretary

 by Jay Mattsson

I’ve known Francis Thicke and his wife, Susan, for over 30 years, and I can testify that he is the real deal. Francis is running for Agriculture Secretary because he has a sincere impulse to engage in public service for the sake of improving Iowa.  Interviewing Francis gave me a chance to experience his brilliant grasp of complex, pressing issues.  Francis has the best mix of qualifications, knowledge and experience that I could hope for in a progressive Democrat seeking to be Iowa’s Agriculture Secretary. I’ve come away from this interview convinced that he’s a viable candidate who has the integrity, humility and wisdom this state needs.

Iowa Federation of Labor Endorses Kirsten Running-Marquardt in House District 33 Special Election

Iowa Federation of Labor Endorses Kirsten Running-Marquardt
in House District 33 Special Election

by Tracy Kurowski

For nine years, House District 33 was represented by Dick Taylor, a former IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) member, who announced his retirement in early October, triggering a Special Election to be held Tuesday, November 24. District 33, which typically elects Democrats, includes 11 precincts primarily on the city’s southwest side of Cedar Rapids.

The Iowa Federation of Labor (IFL) has given Representative Dick Taylor a near-perfect lifetime voting record on behalf of working family issues.  It is a loss for the district and for labor, but we wish him and his family the best in his retirement.

Join an Iowa Rapid Response Team for Health Care Today

OrganizingforAmerica

Across the country, Rapid Response teams of active volunteers will develop a plan to organize their areas - and then execute it in the crucial hours before votes in the House or Senate, right when swing members of Congress are making up their mind.

If we pull it off, the voices of the American people will be louder than special interest lobbyists as we approach the finish line. But to do it, we need our best people involved.

Searching for Iowa's Agricultural History

Searching for Iowa's Agricultural History

by Cathy Lafrenz

I am a farmer.  Plain ... simple.... a farmer.  I grow food.

And I am bothered by the fact that we as Iowans, know more about our I-phones and our cars than we do about the food we eat.  Most of you can tell me every app your phone can do...... but know nothing about where your meat comes from.  We know what type of leather is on the seat of our SUV's but have no idea about the pesticides on our vegetables.  We don't know how the vegetables are raised or when they are harvested.

An Iowa Veteran's Perspective on Afghanistan

An Iowa Veteran's Perspective on Afghanistan

Afghanistan Tipping Point

by Ed Flaherty

It appears the U.S. is at a true tipping point in its Afghanistan war policy. President Obama, after eight meetings with his "war council" (why can’t they call those things peace councils?), has reportedly rejected all four options presented to him, each of which called for an increase in troops. Reports indicate that the President is insisting on an option that details how and when we can militarily exit Afghanistan. That brings a sigh of relief, but that relief is only momentary. After eight years of increasing Afghan, American, and Nato deaths, after eight years of ever-increasing insurgency strength, after eight years of ballooning corruption and deteriorating living conditions, how and when to exit are very valid and difficult questions.
