Iowans Can Take Action on Nuclear Disarmament

Iowans Can Take Action on Nuclear Disarmament

by Paul Deaton

Nuclear disarmament is an Iowa issue for a lot of reasons. So why do so many Iowans seem unaware or unconcerned about the importance of nuclear disarmament?

The President continues to keep the “nuclear football” nearby; enabling the rapid and mutually assured destruction of the planet should Russia launch an attack against the United States. Mutually assured destruction would directly affect Iowans, killing most, if not all of us. That concern does not appear to be sufficient reason to engage Iowans to take political action on nuclear disarmament.

With all of the “loose” nuclear material in the former Soviet Union, terrorists could obtain enough enriched uranium to create a bomb, or steal an existing bomb, and detonate it in an Iowa city.

Local Community Radio Bill Now in House of Representatives

Local Community Radio Bill Now in House of Representatives

The Local Community Radio Act is a bill currently in the House of Representatives that will allow local communities non-commercial access to the publicly owned airwaves.

Cory Fischer-Hoffman, Campaign Director of the Prometheus Radio Project, and Mike Doyle (D-PA) spoke about the Local Community Radio Act on Democracy Now! this morning

Doyle stated that the bill is popular, bipartisan, and has a broad base of support.  The opposition (primarily National Association of Broadcasters, whose technical concerns have been proven unfounded, allowing the bill to move forward) has so far been silent, and they expect the bill to pass, but they remain cautious.

Mike Denklau Attacks Steve King for Partisanship, Distractions

Mike Denklau Attacks Steve King for Partisanship, Distractions

Denklau for Congress.com

At first look, Steve King challenger Mike Denklau may not seem like someone you would expect to be able to put an end to the long Iowa nightmare of Steve King's tenure in Congress, but even if he does not end up ousting Iowa's most embarassing congressman ever, he definitely has a resume that spells success. A 4th generation Iowa native who grew up on a farm, in his brief 26 years, he has collected a set of life experiences that balance his rural roots.  According to the campaign website:

As a banker in New York City at one of the world’s largest financial institutions, Mike’s economic skills were recognized with a promotion offer during the worst business environment in nearly 70 years.

by Alta Price, M.D.

Today, Tuesday, October 20, is a national Congressional call in day for health care reform, with Organizing for America (OFA) as the lead organizer. Call your members of Congress and tell them it’s time to deliver on health care. Let’s shut down the switchboard on Capitol Hill!

You can also go to local OFA events to call your neighbors and ask them to call Congress (presumably after today). You will also participate in a live web cast with President Obama, with an update on where we stand in Congress with the campaign for health care reform.

Public Comment Period Extended for Proposed Marshalltown Coal-Fired Power Plant

Due to extensive interest, the public comment period for the draft air quality construction permits for the coal-fired power plant proposed by Interstate Power and Light for its Marshalltown facility—Sutherland Generating Station—has been extended to May 18. Public hearings will also be held in five additional cities.

Due to the many comments received from particular areas of the state, additional public hearings have been scheduled in Council Bluffs, Davenport, Des Moines, Iowa City and the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area. Specific times and sites have not been determined at this point, but the hearings will likely be held in early May.

Bleeding Heartland and Iowa Independent reported earlier this week that "the Iowa Environmental Council is encouraging U.S. lawmakers to increase clean water infrastructure funding in the economic stimulus plan, now under consideration in Congress."   Blog for Iowa has learned the names of the eighty-seven Iowa communities with water projects ready to go and in need of funding that could be provided by Obama's stimulus plan.  (See list below).  BFIA thanks Ellen Ballas for doing a little extra digging to come up with the list of the Iowa towns from Susan Heathcote.

According to Susan Heathcote, Water Program Director for the Iowa Environmental Council, sixty-six communities in Iowa do not have a public sewer system and 21 communities need help to upgrade their drinking water systems says Heathcote.
