Iowans Can Take Action on Nuclear Disarmament

Iowans Can Take Action on Nuclear Disarmament

by Paul Deaton

Nuclear disarmament is an Iowa issue for a lot of reasons. So why do so many Iowans seem unaware or unconcerned about the importance of nuclear disarmament?

The President continues to keep the “nuclear football” nearby; enabling the rapid and mutually assured destruction of the planet should Russia launch an attack against the United States. Mutually assured destruction would directly affect Iowans, killing most, if not all of us. That concern does not appear to be sufficient reason to engage Iowans to take political action on nuclear disarmament.

With all of the “loose” nuclear material in the former Soviet Union, terrorists could obtain enough enriched uranium to create a bomb, or steal an existing bomb, and detonate it in an Iowa city.

Health Care Reform Update: Kudos to the Quad-City Times for Making Health Care Reform Real for Its Readers

Health Care Reform Update: Kudos to the Quad-City Times for Making Health Care Reform Real for Its Readers

by Alta Price, MD

When I sat down to Sunday morning breakfast with the Quad-City Times, it just about knocked my socks off. Wow! Front page coverage and story after story about how health care reform will impact real live people in my community.

The Quad-City Times interviewed local people with differing health care situations, detailing their problems with insurance, the costs they face, how health insurance determines their job choices, how they decide whether to buy insurance, and so on.

Local Community Radio Bill Now in House of Representatives

Local Community Radio Bill Now in House of Representatives

The Local Community Radio Act is a bill currently in the House of Representatives that will allow local communities non-commercial access to the publicly owned airwaves.

Cory Fischer-Hoffman, Campaign Director of the Prometheus Radio Project, and Mike Doyle (D-PA) spoke about the Local Community Radio Act on Democracy Now! this morning

Doyle stated that the bill is popular, bipartisan, and has a broad base of support.  The opposition (primarily National Association of Broadcasters, whose technical concerns have been proven unfounded, allowing the bill to move forward) has so far been silent, and they expect the bill to pass, but they remain cautious.

Health Care Reform Update: This Thing Is Going To Work (Or, Woot!)

Health Care Reform Update: This Thing Is Going To Work (Or, Woot!)

By Alta Price, M.D.

I just heard on the tee vee Harry Reid’s announcement that the health care reform bill in the Senate will include a public plan option, even if it is one with a state level opt out. I felt like titling this post “Woot!” – a term I first learned blogging at DeanforAmerica.com (and still use when Beryllos, my level 80 Night Elf Hunter in World of Warcraft (WoW) wins a major victory). But I decided I probably had to say a little more than woot! So here is a nice article by Paul Krugman, “

Health Care Reform Update: A Word of Encouragement on the Public Option

Health Care Reform Update: A Word of Encouragement on the Public Option

by Alta Price, M.D.

One of the most frequent requests I get from friends and family is to reassure them that a good health care reform bill will pass in Congress, and that it will include the public option. My optimism does not seem to be the norm on health care reform. But let me assure you, I have never felt so confident of our chances of success!

We are all watching too closely, and it is not good to watch too closely the making of sausage or the making of legislation.

Davenport, Iowa - More than fifty people from the Quad City Area rallied to show support for health care reform and advocate for the public option in front of Senator Grassley’s Davenport office on October 6, 2009.

Senator Grassley is the only member of the Quad City Congressional delegation who is opposed to the public option. Senators Burris and Durbin in Illinois support it, along with Senator Harkin in Iowa, and Congressman Phil Hare (IL 17th), and Congressman Bruce Braley (IA 1st).

Health Care Reform Update: Blue Dogs Do Some Things Right

Health Care Reform Update: Blue Dogs Do Some Things Right

by Alta Price, M.D.

As health care reform bills move through Congress over the next few weeks, different factions will negotiate changes to make the bill more beneficial to their constituents, or, in some cases, their donors. We progressives reflexively assume the Blue Dog Democrats will try to weaken or eliminate the public insurance option. I believe that some of the changes the Blue Dogs want in the public option are good for Iowa, other rural areas, and more fair than what some progressives demand. And I don’t believe I hold this view just because I am an Iowan or a physician.

Health Care Reform Update: Saving Money on Health Care by Changing Our Diet

Health Care Reform Update: Saving Money on Health Care by Changing Our Diet

by Alta Price, M.D.

This fascinating opinion piece from the New York Times, "Big Food vs. Big Insurance", suggests that requiring health insurers to take all comers, regardless of pre-existing conditions or their risk of getting sick, gives insurers an incentive to advocate for public policies that will lower health care costs. There are many reasons our health care system is the most expensive in the world (yet we don’t have the best health outcomes), but one of them is we Americans are fatter and have more chronic diseases. From the article:

Health Care Reform Update: Right Wing Arguments Against Health Care Reform

Health Care Reform Update: Right Wing Arguments Against Health Care Reform

by Alta Price

A listener named Sean (or perhaps Shawn) sent this to the Stephanie Miller Show, and Steph read it on Tuesday, September 8, during the first hour of the show. I modified it slightly, since apparently there were 20 arguments, but Steph only read 18.

Right wing arguments against health care reform:

1. Although efforts have been made to reform health care since 1912, we should not be too hasty in enacting change.
