An Iowa Veteran's Perspective on Afghanistan

An Iowa Veteran's Perspective on Afghanistan

Afghanistan Tipping Point

by Ed Flaherty

It appears the U.S. is at a true tipping point in its Afghanistan war policy. President Obama, after eight meetings with his "war council" (why can’t they call those things peace councils?), has reportedly rejected all four options presented to him, each of which called for an increase in troops. Reports indicate that the President is insisting on an option that details how and when we can militarily exit Afghanistan. That brings a sigh of relief, but that relief is only momentary. After eight years of increasing Afghan, American, and Nato deaths, after eight years of ever-increasing insurgency strength, after eight years of ballooning corruption and deteriorating living conditions, how and when to exit are very valid and difficult questions.

Iowans Can Take Action on Nuclear Disarmament

Iowans Can Take Action on Nuclear Disarmament

by Paul Deaton

Nuclear disarmament is an Iowa issue for a lot of reasons. So why do so many Iowans seem unaware or unconcerned about the importance of nuclear disarmament?

The President continues to keep the “nuclear football” nearby; enabling the rapid and mutually assured destruction of the planet should Russia launch an attack against the United States. Mutually assured destruction would directly affect Iowans, killing most, if not all of us. That concern does not appear to be sufficient reason to engage Iowans to take political action on nuclear disarmament.

With all of the “loose” nuclear material in the former Soviet Union, terrorists could obtain enough enriched uranium to create a bomb, or steal an existing bomb, and detonate it in an Iowa city.

Health Care Reform Update: Kudos to the Quad-City Times for Making Health Care Reform Real for Its Readers

Health Care Reform Update: Kudos to the Quad-City Times for Making Health Care Reform Real for Its Readers

by Alta Price, MD

When I sat down to Sunday morning breakfast with the Quad-City Times, it just about knocked my socks off. Wow! Front page coverage and story after story about how health care reform will impact real live people in my community.

The Quad-City Times interviewed local people with differing health care situations, detailing their problems with insurance, the costs they face, how health insurance determines their job choices, how they decide whether to buy insurance, and so on.

Local Community Radio Bill Now in House of Representatives

Local Community Radio Bill Now in House of Representatives

The Local Community Radio Act is a bill currently in the House of Representatives that will allow local communities non-commercial access to the publicly owned airwaves.

Cory Fischer-Hoffman, Campaign Director of the Prometheus Radio Project, and Mike Doyle (D-PA) spoke about the Local Community Radio Act on Democracy Now! this morning

Doyle stated that the bill is popular, bipartisan, and has a broad base of support.  The opposition (primarily National Association of Broadcasters, whose technical concerns have been proven unfounded, allowing the bill to move forward) has so far been silent, and they expect the bill to pass, but they remain cautious.

Health Care Reform Update: A Word of Encouragement on the Public Option

Health Care Reform Update: A Word of Encouragement on the Public Option

by Alta Price, M.D.

One of the most frequent requests I get from friends and family is to reassure them that a good health care reform bill will pass in Congress, and that it will include the public option. My optimism does not seem to be the norm on health care reform. But let me assure you, I have never felt so confident of our chances of success!

We are all watching too closely, and it is not good to watch too closely the making of sausage or the making of legislation.

Davenport, Iowa - More than fifty people from the Quad City Area rallied to show support for health care reform and advocate for the public option in front of Senator Grassley’s Davenport office on October 6, 2009.

Senator Grassley is the only member of the Quad City Congressional delegation who is opposed to the public option. Senators Burris and Durbin in Illinois support it, along with Senator Harkin in Iowa, and Congressman Phil Hare (IL 17th), and Congressman Bruce Braley (IA 1st).

Harkin Steak Fry with Jokes - Indianola, Iowa

Harkin Steak Fry with Jokes

Indianola, Iowa

As we drove into Indianola Sunday, shortly after noon, we started to tense up, wondering where the protesters were going to appear.  Bracing ourselves, we continued across town.  Spotting the “Harkin Steak Fry” sign on the corner, we kept going, and right before the Warren County Fairgrounds, there was a small gaggle of people with some signage.  We were by them too quickly to even read the signs, so we weren't even sure whose side they were on.  That was it.  There was to be no further assault on our senses for the rest of the day - on to the Democratic oasis that would be the Harkin Steak Fry (well, you couldn't really have a Harkin Tofu Steam, as the star of the day, the junior Senator from Minnesota, Al Franken, would later joke).

HCAN Health Care Rally at Iowa STate Fair

HCAN "Health Care Can't Wait" Rally at the Iowa State Fair

By Caroline Vernon

Last Friday on August 21st, Eastern Iowans from Progressive Action for the Common Good, the Quad Cities Federation of Labor, and NAMI of Scott County boarded a bus and traveled to the HCAN "Healthcare Can't Wait" Rally outside of the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines.  We joined others from the area and around the state.  Senator Grassley was finishing up his Ambassadorial tour - we were hoping to get his attention somehow, but by dumb luck and a little synchronistic guidance by the Universe, a few of us stumbled right on top of him.

An Ounce of Prevention and a Pound of Letting Go

An Ounce of Prevention and a Pound of Letting Go

by Paul Deaton

"After eight hours of lifting barrels, about the only thing I felt like doing after work was hitting the tavern when it opened at 6:00 AM and then heading home to crash and sleep."

Something seems missing in the current discussion regarding the health care bills in congress, and it is significant.

I first understood the words “sick care” in 2007 at a public health conference in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Julie Gerberding, then director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, laid out the human lifecycle of dollars spent on health care in the United States, with its focus on treating diseases once they are diagnosed.
