New Report: Pollution Up 35% in Iowa since 1990
EnvironmentIowa.org

Environment Iowa will release a new analysis of government data today on trends in carbon dioxide from fossil fuel consumption in Iowa and nationally from 1990 to 2007.  This is the first time the 2006 and 2007 state data have been released.  The report comes as Congress moves to consider a major energy and global warming bill and as EPA considers the first-ever federal rules to cut global warming pollution from tailpipes and smokestacks, the two biggest culprits.

Iowans Can Take Action on Nuclear Disarmament

Iowans Can Take Action on Nuclear Disarmament

by Paul Deaton

Nuclear disarmament is an Iowa issue for a lot of reasons. So why do so many Iowans seem unaware or unconcerned about the importance of nuclear disarmament?

The President continues to keep the “nuclear football” nearby; enabling the rapid and mutually assured destruction of the planet should Russia launch an attack against the United States. Mutually assured destruction would directly affect Iowans, killing most, if not all of us. That concern does not appear to be sufficient reason to engage Iowans to take political action on nuclear disarmament.

With all of the “loose” nuclear material in the former Soviet Union, terrorists could obtain enough enriched uranium to create a bomb, or steal an existing bomb, and detonate it in an Iowa city.

Local Community Radio Bill Now in House of Representatives

Local Community Radio Bill Now in House of Representatives

The Local Community Radio Act is a bill currently in the House of Representatives that will allow local communities non-commercial access to the publicly owned airwaves.

Cory Fischer-Hoffman, Campaign Director of the Prometheus Radio Project, and Mike Doyle (D-PA) spoke about the Local Community Radio Act on Democracy Now! this morning

Doyle stated that the bill is popular, bipartisan, and has a broad base of support.  The opposition (primarily National Association of Broadcasters, whose technical concerns have been proven unfounded, allowing the bill to move forward) has so far been silent, and they expect the bill to pass, but they remain cautious.

Politics of Division: Iowa NAACP President Endorses Anti-Gay Vander Plaats for Governor

Politics of Division:  Iowa NAACP President Endorses Anti-Gay Vander Plaats for Governor

One Iowa

Rev. Keith Ratliff Sr., registered Democrat and president of the Iowa-Nebraska chapter of the NAACP announced his support for anti-gay Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob Vander Plaats on Monday. If elected, Vander Plaats has pledged to pass an executive order to halt the freedom to marry in Iowa, thereby disobeying Iowa law and operating beyond the powers of the Governor.

Ratliff's ties to Chuck Hurley and the extremist Iowa Family Policy Center are well documented, including their efforts to fund the Joshua Christian Academy, a private Christian school in Des Moines.

All Hands On Deck! Iowa Activists Join Howard Dean in the Fight for Health Care

All Hands on Deck!   Iowa Activists Join Howard Dean in the Fight for Health Care

“This fight is about giving choice to the American people.”

HOWARD DEAN IN DES MOINES, MAY 28, 2009

Report prepared by Karen Metcalf, Bettendorf, Iowa

This week, Dr. Howard Dean was at the First Unitarian Church in Des Moines speaking on the merits of a “true” public plan option in the health care reform legislation currently being crafted in Washington, D.C.  His appearance was a joint effort of Health Care for America Now and Democracy for America.  As a full-time volunteer activist who works on health care reform (state and national levels), as well as one of the original Dean supporters in his campaign for president, I was obviously interested in and excited about this event.

Health Care Reform Call to Action: Learn by Doing - the DFA Way

Health Care Reform Call to Action:  Learn by Doing - the DFA Way

by Alta Price, M.D.

Democracy for America doesn’t just ask you to call your elected official on the phone – they give you the skills you need to do more advanced lobbying and then ask you to put those skills to use. I hope many DFA members around Iowa will sign up for the next DFA Night School - a Health Care Action Meeting. The push is to arrange constituent meetings with local elected officials and get them to sign onto the public plan option – StandwithDrDean.com.

Since Dr. Dean will be visiting Des Moines on May 28, wouldn’t it be nice if we came prepared for action by having attended a

DNR Report confirms Iowa's poor water quality
Iowa CCI members call on state to protect Iowa's water

Des Moines, Iowa - On Tuesday, April 21, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) released its 2009 Environmental Report Card for the state of Iowa.  The DNR report card gave Iowa a C- for water quality due to the high levels of pollution in Iowa's rivers and streams.  This report card is more evidence showing that Iowa has some of the dirtiest water in the country, and that we must make cleaning up our waters and preventing more pollution a priority.

Iowa Senate Agriculture Committee Caves in to Factory Farm Industry

Iowa Senate Agriculture Committee Caves in to Factory Farm Industry

iowacci.org

Note from BFIA:  We like a good porkburger as much as the next person, but that does not mean we think the Iowa Pork Producers should get to have undue influence in putting Iowans' health and water quality at risk.  Read the bad news below on this bill and then take action.

Des Moines, Iowa - The Senate Agriculture Committee caved in to the big-money interests of livestock commodity groups like the Iowa Pork Producers today when they passed a bill (SF 308) that would undercut the Department of Natural Resources' (DNR) rulemaking process to restrict manure application on frozen ground.
