Glenn Beck Calls SEIU "Radical," "Marxist," Calls Nurses "Amazing"

Glenn Beck Calls SEIU "Radical," "Marxist," Calls SEIU Nurses "Amazing"

Here is an excerpt from an article we found on AlterNet.org yesterday, thanks to a post on the Iowa Media Reform list-serve.  We are delighted to present to our readers yet another reason to call your local radio station and demand that they add some progressive alternative programming to make up for the wasted air time they spend broadcasting Glenn Beck.  Iowa Station information is below the article.

[Yesterday] a hospitalized Glenn Beck tweeted in praise of the "AMAZING drs/nurses" who have cared for him since the emergency removal of his inflamed appendix [Monday] afternoon.

Jon Stewart Impersonates Glenn Beck for Entire Segment

Jon Stewart Impersonates Glenn Beck for Entire Segment

Huffingtonpost.com

"You know who else didn't answer medical questions?  Hitler." ~ Jon Stewart

The "Daily Show" host spent an entire segment acting like, talking like, crying like, dancing like, and gesticulating like Glenn Beck. He was inspired by the fact that Beck recently had his appendix removed to create the 11/3 project-taking America back to a time before Beck lost his vestigial organ.

"Apparently the medicine that was good enough for our founding fathers is now considered politically or medically incorrect," Stewart said employing both air quotes and crazy voice registers that left the viewer wondering who and what he was quoting.

Iowans Can Take Action on Nuclear Disarmament

Iowans Can Take Action on Nuclear Disarmament

by Paul Deaton

Nuclear disarmament is an Iowa issue for a lot of reasons. So why do so many Iowans seem unaware or unconcerned about the importance of nuclear disarmament?

The President continues to keep the “nuclear football” nearby; enabling the rapid and mutually assured destruction of the planet should Russia launch an attack against the United States. Mutually assured destruction would directly affect Iowans, killing most, if not all of us. That concern does not appear to be sufficient reason to engage Iowans to take political action on nuclear disarmament.

With all of the “loose” nuclear material in the former Soviet Union, terrorists could obtain enough enriched uranium to create a bomb, or steal an existing bomb, and detonate it in an Iowa city.

Local Community Radio Bill Now in House of Representatives

Local Community Radio Bill Now in House of Representatives

The Local Community Radio Act is a bill currently in the House of Representatives that will allow local communities non-commercial access to the publicly owned airwaves.

Cory Fischer-Hoffman, Campaign Director of the Prometheus Radio Project, and Mike Doyle (D-PA) spoke about the Local Community Radio Act on Democracy Now! this morning

Doyle stated that the bill is popular, bipartisan, and has a broad base of support.  The opposition (primarily National Association of Broadcasters, whose technical concerns have been proven unfounded, allowing the bill to move forward) has so far been silent, and they expect the bill to pass, but they remain cautious.

Are Iowans Being Brainwashed by Fox News?

Are Iowans Being Brainwashed by Fox News?

[Brainwash:  subject (a person) to a process by which ideas are implanted in the mind]

Well, it does feel like torture, listening to Fox or right-wing talk radio for any length of time at all.  To listen, you either have to allow yourself to be indoctrinated, or go crazy, or laugh (but it's hard to do that because it really isn't funny), or turn it off and then pretend it isn't there.  And it seems progressives and the unindoctrinated are mostly dealing with it by pretending it just isn't there.  You hear this all the time:  "Where do people get these ideas?"

We really hope Michael Moore's next movie will be about the right wing media.

Health Care Reform Update: It's Time to Deliver

Health Care Reform Update: It’s Time to Deliver

by Alta Price, M.D.

Today, Tuesday, October 20, is a national Congressional call in day for health care reform, with Organizing for America (OFA) as the lead organizer. Call your members of Congress and tell them it’s time to deliver on health care. Let’s shut down the switchboard on Capitol Hill!

You can also go to local OFA events to call your neighbors and ask them to call Congress (presumably after today). You will also participate in a live web cast with President Obama, with an update on where we stand in Congress with the campaign for health care reform.

Glenn Beck Sells Snake Oil to Unsuspecting Iowans

Glenn Beck Sells Snake Oil to Unsuspecting Iowans

First, there is something being done by citizens nationwide, which you can participate in (see below), but we also need to take responsibility for what goes on here in Iowa, where GB reaches a large audience of unsuspecting natives who, for one dysfunctional reason or another, think he is for real and don't understand that he is merely a TV/Radio personality who is getting filthy rich by convincing his audiences to support ideas and policies which do not benefit them and actually harm them.

Snake oil salesmen such as Beck have been around for thousands of years, but should they really be allowed free, unchallenged access to the

Van Jones Resigns: Help Get Glenn Beck Off The Air in Iowa

Van Jones Resigns: Help Get Glenn Beck off the Air in Iowa

Van Jones' resignation is the result of a right-wing smear led by Glenn Beck, and this is the first battle in the upcoming media reform war that BFIA predicts will look a lot like the health care reform "debate."

You can go to Huffpo or WSJ to read the story, but here's the part that is so annoying:  Van Jones is called "radical" because, back in the 90's,  "He was involved with the group Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement (STORM), which sympathized with Maoist-inspired peasant movements throughout the world and was organized to protest police brutality.

Sioux City Still Fighting South Dakota Oil Refinery

Sioux City Still Fighting South Dakota Oil Refinery
by Michele Linck, The Hyperion Project

Is Iowa key to Hyperion air permit denial?

Several opponents of the proposed Hyperion Refinery [in Union County, South Dakota] seem to be mentioning frequently the fact that the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources allowed Hyperion to use air quality data for Sioux Falls when figuring the composite amount of pollution the refinery’s emissions would mean for the air in Southeastern South Dakota.

They argue that Sioux City is twice as close to the site just north of Elk Point, S.D., as is Sioux Falls. And, and since the atomoshpere doesn’t respect state lines, it is Sioux City’s (much dirtier) air quality that should be included in the formula. The total projected pollution would likely prohibit construction of the refinery here, they say, due to federal limits.
