After visits to state, Clinton closes in on McCain in KY poll

Just two days after a new Democratic primary poll found Senator Hillary Clinton increasing her lead over Senator Barack Obama in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, she now appears to have closed to within points of Senator John McCain in a general election match-up.

A new SurveyUSA poll - sponsored by Louisville's WHAS-TV and WCPO-TV in Cincinnati - shows Clinton within the margin of error in Kentucky in a hypothetical general election contest with McCain. Clinton polls 46 percent to McCain's 48 percent support among 538 registered voters in the Commonwealth.

Undecided respondents accounted for 6 percent of the poll. The margin of error is plus or minus 4.3 percent. The poll measured support between April 11 and April 13.

Last month, another SurveyUSA poll found Clinton at 43 percent against McCain's 53 percent. Then, 4 percent of respondents were undecided. Data for that poll was collected between March 14 and March 16.

Clinton appears to have made up significant ground in Metro Louisville, where she now leads McCain 49 to 48 percent. Last month's poll showed her down in that region 55 to 41 percent.

The New York Senator held a rally in Louisville on March 29.

She also made gains in western Kentucky, cutting McCain's 35 point lead in March to a ten point lead in the latest poll. Clinton appeared in that region at the annual Governor Ruby Laffoon fundraiser in Madisonville on the same day as her Louisville rally.

Senator Barack Obama's general election chances against McCain in the Bluegrass State are no brighter than in March, according to SurveyUSA numbers. Now, Obama pulls 29 percent statewide. McCain garners 63 percent support.

The earlier SurveyUSA measurements gave Obama 28 percent, with McCain getting 64 percent.

Senator Obama has yet to visit the state during the primary competition, but his campaign is scheduled to open their seventh Kentucky office next week.
