More shuffling in Lunsford camp

Shortly after spokeswoman Allison Haley voluntarily left the campaign of Democratic Senate nominee Bruce Lunsford, more changes are occurring for the Louisville businessman's effort to unseat incumbent U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Louisville).

Joe Gerth of the Louisville Courier-Journal reports Lunsford has brought Michael Donilon, of Blizzard Communication, on board as its new media consultant.

Donilon is a long-time Democratic pollster and consultant who recently served as a senior advisor to the U.S. Sen. John Kerry’s (D-Mass.) 2004 presidential bid.). He is also a veteran of the consulting firm Shrum, Devine, & Donilon.

Lunsford campaign spokesperson Cary Stemle said the impact of Donilon’s work would be seen in the coming weeks.

“You soon will see the tone the campaign is going to take,” Stemle told PolitickerKY.com. “His imprint will become clear.”

Gerth also reports the campaign's previous media consultant, David Eichenbaum of Struble Eichenbaum Communications, will now only have a limited role with Lunsford's campaign after "continuing disagreements" on strategy - though those remain unspecified.

The Lunsford camp claims Eichenbaum’s altered position in the campaign is not the result of bad blood.

"Campaigns tend to not want to cut themselves off from new ideas,” said Stemle. “I don’t have any sense that it was acrimonious.”

Lunsford's campaign will also receive assistance from Phil Singer, who previously served as a spokesman for U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) and U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).

Singer was sent to help the campaign by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. That organization is chaired by Schumer, who reportedly encouraged Lunsford to enter the race against McConnell earlier this year.

The shake-ups come a week after Haley was replaced by Stemle, the former editor of LEO, a Louisville alternative weekly.

Yesterday, Polwatchers also reported Lunsford's "web guru," Nathan Dickerson also left the campaign and returned to his hometown of Lexington to work for state Rep. Kathy Stein's run for a state Senate seat.
