Massachussetts pols rally support in Senate race

In the last two days, two high-profile politicians from Massachussetts have lent their support to the candidates on either side of Kentucky's U.S. Senate race. Yesterday, it was former Gov. and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney dispatching an e-mail to supporters of incumbent U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Louisville). Today, U.S. Sen. and former Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry sent a similar e-mail on behalf of Democratic candidate Bruce Lunsford.

Both Northerners hit the principal talking points of the respective campaigns in their messages. Romney focused on McConnell's leadership position in the Senate and framed his campaign as one of interest to McConnell's adversaries.

"Liberal Democrats have targeted Mitch because, frankly, as Senate Republican Leader he stands in the way of their wrong-headed plans for our country," read the message signed by Romney. "Mitch McConnell is the highest-ranking Republican in the Senate, a place where it's hard to get things done. His friends and foes alike both acknowledge his effectiveness in delivering for his constituents and crafting commonsense legislation that benefits all Americans."

"His opponent was handpicked by Chuck Schumer and will be a reliable vote for the Democrats. And as we face the very real possibility of an Obama presidency, that's the last thing we need," Romney continued.

Kerry, on the other hand, generally blasted McConnell's campaign ads as "dishonest" and equated the incumbent's tactics as akin to those Kerry faced during his 2004 presidential election.

"Four years ago, I saw how low the Republican attack machine would stoop in pursuit of power when they used veterans to attack me personally," said the e-mail signed by Kerry. " I said after that election that I would never again let them get away with it. And now that they're using the same dirty tactics in Kentucky, I'm calling them out on it."

"Scared by polls that show the race one of the closest in the country, Mitch McConnell is attacking his opponent, National Guard and Army Reserve veteran Bruce Lunsford, in some really despicable and malicious ads," Kerry continued.

Both e-mails concluded by directing supporters to websites that collected contributions on behalf of both campaigns.
