Discovery of Obama effigy at UK draws outrage

The discovery of an effigy of Barack Obama hung from a tree on the campus of the University of Kentucky this morning has elicited a sharp reaction from many in the Commonwealth, including Gov. Steve Beshear (D-Lexington) and state House leadership.

"This was not political speech. It was simply hate. It was profoundly wrong and deeply offensive," said Beshear in a statement. "This incident does not reflect who we are as a flagship institution of higher learning or a Commonwealth. I appreciate the university's resolve to investigate this matter and ensure that such actions will not be tolerated."

A joint statement from state House leadership was also circulated about the incident.

"The outrageous action discovered on the University of Kentucky campus this morning has left us hurt, disgusted, and in disbelief that it could take place in this day and time," read the statement. "This should in no way reflect poorly on UK, and we pray that it will not cast a false light on the good people of the Commonwealth.  We hope those responsible are caught and prosecuted to the full extent of the law."

University President Lee Todd said he was "personally offended and deeply embarrassed" by the incident, and announced that he planned to personally apologize to the Obama family.
