Northup concedes, doubts a future political run

Speaking to reporters after delivering her concession speech tonight, former U.S Rep. Anne Northup (R-Louisville) said she isn't likely to seek political office in the future.

"I don't anticipate any campaigns in the future," said Northup.

The Republican candidate in the 3rd Congressional District this year, Northup has run three campaigns in three years: her 2006 campaign when she lost her seat to tonight's winner, U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Louisville), her loss in the 2007 Republican Gubernatorial primary, and this year's effort to take the 3rd back.

During her remarks before the crowd here at the Galt House in Louisville, she spoke of her late entry into the race - occurring after the anticipated Republican candidate, Erwin Roberts, was called into active duty military service.

She said she did not anticipate her run this year, but jumped in to challenger Yarmuth when Roberts was deployed.

"I do believe it is important we have a vigorous debate about the issues," said Northup.

Northup also praised U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Louisville), for whom the crowd is now watching election returns from western Kentucky.

Northup called McConnell an "inspiration for our party across the state."

When asked afterwards if McConnell had encouraged her to jump in the race, Northup said it was an "independent decision."

Discussing her future plans, she said she planned to spend more time with her family.

WIth regard to future political campaigns, she said "I expect I'll take a different course."

"Right now, I can't imagine I would do that," she said of running again.
