In an initial measurement of the 2010 political climate for Senate races, the Cook Political Report contends that the race for U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning's (R-Southgate) seat is a "toss-up." The political analysts at the Washington-based outlet also hold that Bunning is a "potential retirement."
Bunning narrowly fought off a tough 2004 challenge from then-state Sen. Dan Mongiardo (D-Hazard), who currently serves as the lieutenant governor. Mongiardo is now one of several rumored potential Democratic candidates gunning for the seat.
Bunning edged Mongiardo in 2004 by just over one percent despite Kentucky favoring President George W. Bush that same year by nearly 20 points.
Prior to this year's general election, Bunning continually asserted he would be seeking a third-term in 2010, though some analysts - such as those at the Cook Report - evidently are not convinced.
Last weekend, while speaking at a state Republican central committee meeting, Bunning said it would take $10 million to hold his seat.
"I'm telling you right now we're going to kick butt in 2010," said Bunning, according to reports.
A Baseball Hall of Fame inductee, Bunning would be 79 at the time of the general election in 2010.
Just three of the 35 Senate seats up for election in 2010 were deemed "toss-ups" by the Cook Report. All of them are currently-Republican held.
