After U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Southgate) weighed in with some speculation about his potential 2010 Democratic opponents today, some of the rumored Democratic candidates offered their own take on where things stand on their side.

On a conference call with reporters this morning, Bunning asserted that he though Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo (D-Hazard) and Attorney General Jack Conway (D-Louisville) were his likely opponents, claiming that Conway and State Auditor Crit Luallen (D-Frankfort) "got together and decided" Conway would run, citing health concerns on Luallen's side.

This afternoon, Luallen told PolitickerKY.com that a 2010 Senate run was not off the table for her and rejected Bunning's assertion that an "agreement" had been made.

"Jack Conway and I are close friends and we talk frequently," said Luallen. "But neither of us has discussed any final decision."

"I have not ruled out the race and, as far as I know, Jack has not ruled out the race," she added.

Luallen acknowledged both she and Conway have an "interest" in the race, but added "certainly no agreement was reached" of the sort to which Bunning referenced.

A two-time survivor of cancer, Luallen said her health had been an issue she weighed when considering the Governor's race in 2007 and the U.S. Senate race this year. Now, however, she says she just had a "very successful three-year check-up" and her health was "going well."

As for the Attorney General, in the midst of his comments, Bunning suggested Conway may announce within the next two weeks.

In reaction, a spokesperson from the Attorney General's office responded told PolitickerKY.com that "anything is possible."

"He may or may not announce within two weeks," said Allison Martin, Conway's spokesperson.
