Scheduled Bunning event in suburban Detroit cancelled after vote to kill auto bailout

U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Southgate) was scheduled to sign autographs at a sports cards show in suburban Detroit this weekend, but organizers have now scrapped his appearance after Bunning voted to kill a $14 billion loan package to ailing domestic automakers.

"The event was cancelled due to his vote that occurred yesterday," said Bob Koester, President of the Gibraltar Trade Centers public markets.

Bunning and McConnell vote to kill auto bailout

As expected, Kentucky's two U.S. Senators voted yesterday to halt progress on a $14 billion package of aid to domestic automakers. Both Jim Bunning (R-Southgate) and Mitch McConnell (R-Louisville) voted against a cloture motion late last night that would have squashed filibuster efforts threatened against the bill by Senate Republicans.

Grayson: Tax reform 'is the only real answer' to budget shortfall

Secretary of State Trey Grayson (R- Richwood) weighed in on Gov. Steve Beshear's (D-Lexington) proposed solutions for the $456 million budget shortfall, targeting the proposed cuts in spending.

"I am not sure that there are any other ways to articulate that we are going to experience severe pain due to these proposed cuts. This pain should send a clear message to the Governor and Legislature that we must find a bi-partisan, long-term solution to this problem, not just a quick fix," said Grayson in a statement.

Beshear to hold town hall meetings on budget shortfall

Gov. Steve Beshear (D-Lexington) will hit the road to discuss his proposed remedies for the $456 million budget shortfall, holding four town hall meetings throughout the state starting today.

Beshear presented his proposals to the media this morning. Most visibly, the Governor aims to raise the state cigarette tax 70 cents per pack, impose three day furloughs for state employees, utilize a "rainy day fund" and cut $147 million in spending.

The budget shortfall and these proposals will take center stage at Beshear's public meetings.

McConnell objects to revised auto bailout plan

U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Louisville) announced on the Senate floor this morning that the auto industry bailout package agreed to by Congressional Democratic leadership and the White House did not meet the requirements he said were necessary for the support of skeptical Republicans.

"We reviewed it closely to see if it meets the criteria that I have laid out repeatedly for taxpayer-protections and an effective strategy for securing the long-term viability of these companies," said McConnell. "In the end, I concluded that it does not."

Walker not a likely candidate for SD-32

After becoming the first Mayor of Bowling Green in history to win re-election earlier this year, Elaine Walker says she is not likely to seek the 32nd state Senate district seat.

As the district - which includes part of Bowling Green  - is poised to open with incumbent state Sen. Brett Guthrie (R-Bowling Green) moving on to his new role as U.S. Rep. from the 2nd Congressional District, speculation has begun as to who wants to fill the vacancy.

Duncan works the phones for re-election campaign

With his bid for re-election to the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee finally official, Inez native Mike Duncan campaigned hard "through the evening" yesterday contacting voting members of the RNC, according to a spokesperson.

Duncan kicked off his campaign for a second-term at the RNC helm yesterday with the launch of a website and an e-mail to each of the 168 voting members of the national Committee.

The federal government's bailout of the auto industry cleared its first hurdle last night, passing the U.S. House on a vote of 237 to 170.

Kentucky's delegation split on the bill, with three U.S. Reps. breaking for it and three against:

District 1 - Ed Whitfield (R-Hopkinsville) - NO

District 2 - Ron Lewis (R-Cecilia) - YES

District 3 - John Yarmuth (D-Louisville) - YES

District 4 - Geoff Davis (R-Hebron) - NO

District 5 - Hal Rogers (R-Somerset) - NO

District 6 - Ben Chandler (D-Versailles) - YES
