Mongiardo goes west for health conference

Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo (D-Hazard) will attend the Milbank Memorial Fund Annual Meeting this week in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he is scheduled to deliver a presentation on healthcare in Kentucky.

"Kentucky is leading the way in many innovations in healthcare technologies and practices, and I am honored to have the opportunity to share with other healthcare leaders about our developments here in the Commonwealth," said Mongiardo in a statement.

According to a release from his office, Mongiardo's remarks are scheduled for Thursday morning.

Bunning touts support of unemployment insurance extension

U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Southgate), a frequent and vocal opponent of the recent ‘bailout' legislation making its way before Congress, announced his support for legislation that would extend unemployment benefits by seven weeks.

The Unemployment Compensation Extension Act of 2008 passed today by voice vote after the Senate voted easily to invoke cloture in the face of six opponents. U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Louisville) joined Bunning in the cloture vote.

Controversy over recanvass in SD-23

The secretary of state's office rejected criticism today from the Kentucky Democratic Party, which alleged that "questions remained" in the wake of a recanvass yesterday that showed no change in the result for the race in the 23rd state Senate district.

After that recanvass, Kathy Groob (D-Covington) was shown to be 807 votes behind state Sen. Jack Westwood (R-Crescent Springs).
