Fancy Farm 2009: Plastic Spoons and Loons

It was great to be back at Fancy Farm on Saturday, the one-of-a-kind political circus where Kentucky politics tends to show its best and worst aspects every year.

This year's "episode" was largely a showcase of fresh blood from both parties. On the Republican side we had youngster Trey Grayson taking over the reigns from Jim Bunning (though still blatantly puppeted by ole Mitch). For the Democrats, the two youngsters were the squeaky clean MySpace Batman and Ken doll Jack Conway, and the eyebrow waxing hetero-hunting-coal-doctor Dan Mongiardo. Whatever the outcome of the 2010 Senate race, we're pretty much assured that at least 2 of these 3 will be among their party's leaders for the next generation.

Amid revenue shortfall, Governor cuts his own pay

Gov. Steve Beshear's (D-Lexington) paychecks will be a little bit lighter in 2009, as he announced today that he and his senior staff will take a ten percent pay cut to contribute towards remedying the $456 million state budget shortfall.

Along with the Governor, 10 percent will be shaved off the salaries of Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo (D-Hazard), Beshear's Chief of Staff Adam Edelen, Deputy CoS Vince Gabbert, executive cabinet secretary Larry Hayes, General Counsel Ellen Hesen, and Communications Director Jay Blanton.

Another change in Beshear's office as Brown makes way for Blanton

Staff reshuffling in the office of Gov. Steve Beshear (D-Lexington) continued today, with the announcement that communications director Dick Brown will be replaced by Jay Blanton.

Blanton comes to the position after a nearly four year tenure as executive director of marketing and public relations for the University of Kentucky.

Prior to that job, he served as deputy communications director for Louisville's Democratic mayor, Jerry Abramson.

He also worked with the public relations firms Guthrie-Mayes and Preston-Osbourne.

Interview: Adam Edelen joins Beshear's staff with private-sector principles

The lexicon in the office of Governor Steve Beshear (D-Lexington) may be changing with the arrival of Adam Edelen, who took the helm as Beshear's new chief of staff last week.

In an interview with PolitickerKY.com conducted last Friday, Edelen says he is bringing the lessons of his experience in the private sector with him into Beshear's office, noting he wants the administration to become more "customer service oriented" in its dealings.
