Kentucky: Anne Northup

Obama rescues Anne Northup from political obscurity

This is absolutely bizarre:
President Barack Obama announced Thursday that he would nominate former Republican U.S. Rep. Anne Northup of Louisville to fill one of two new commissioner spots being added to the the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

"I'm really thrilled and looking forward to it," Northup said in telephone interview from Washington.

Northup, who served in Congress from 1997 through 2006, must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

As part of a broad reform of the agency last year, Congress added two positions to the three-member commission that are to be filled by two Republicans and three Democrats.

Northup said Kentucky U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, the Senate Republican leader, suggested her name to the president for one of the GOP spots.I thought we had finally heard the last from Anne. Guess not...

Congressman Awesome

I noticed something about B&P this weekend. We hardly ever write about John Yarmuth anymore. When I began my KY blogging phase seriously in early 2007, I wrote constantly about all of the great stuff that Congressman Yarmuth was doing. He was constantly standing up for our principles and standing up to President Bush, refusing to apologize one inch the entire way. From Iraq to FISA to Article I, John was everything that we want out of our Congresspersons.

Along the way, Yarmy showed Chandler the path to righteousness, then last Fall showed Anne Northup the path to political extinction with a 19-point beatdown.

Mongiardo’s ICG donations even worse than they appear

Last week we shared with you how Dan Mongiardo’s campaign chest is full of the mountaintop removing International Coal Group, whose executives all maxed out to Lt. Dan in the first quarter. A day after the EPA declaration to crack down on mountaintop removal and Mongiardo’s desperate pleas to Washington, the Louisville Army Corps of Engineers decided to ignore the EPA and announce that ICG would be allowed to bury 1.7 more miles of streams in Leslie County. The ICG money then started flowing into Mongiardo’s headquarters.

Ain’t dirty politics grand?

Well, once you look into the background of ICG and their donors, the story looks even worse.

If Gay Marriage Decides Our Senate Primary....

I recently wrote an article on this site defending Daniel Mongiardo as a Senate Primary candidate despite the fact that he does not support Gay Marriage. Now myself, I don't believe in persecution of any minority. When Gay Marriage was on the ballot in Kentucky I was one of the paltry minority that voted IN FAVOR of it. However, I do not believe that just because a candidate is opposed to it, that means they are lining up to lynch gays at every possible opportunity.
I have not declared Daniel Mongiardo as my choice in the Kentucky Senate Primary for 2010.

Latest Yarmuth ad touts first-term awards

The campaign of U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Louisville) launched a new television ad this week outlining a series of awards the freshman incumbent received during his first term in Congress.

"John was named ‘best representative for kids,'" says a narrator as a shot of Yarmuth pushing a child on a swing is displayed.

That designation came from a list compiled by the Children's Defense Fund.
