Lexington Airport thieves soon headed to the slammer

Excellent news this morning, as 4 of the corrupt thieves who looted us at the Lexington Airport have been indicted:
Former Blue Grass Airport executive director Michael A. Gobb and three of his managers were indicted on felony theft charges Tuesday. The charges stem from hundreds of thousands of dollars in questionable expenses the four men billed to the airport.

Gobb faces nine theft charges. Also charged were John Rhodes, the former director of administration and finance, with six charges; John Coon, the airport's former director of operations, and John P. Slone, who was director of planning and development, with one each. The airport board forced the four men to resign last winter.

Lexington to develop an oath for boards and commission members

Urban County Council members are interested in creating an oath that city board and commission members must sign when they agree to serve.

The purpose of the oath would be to remind the board and commission members of their responsibilities and duties, said Councilman Julian Beard, who suggested the idea in response to the expense scandal at Blue Grass Airport. “It’s not a magic bullet by any means. It’s a step. It sensitizes the various and sundry directors to their responsibilities and duties. I can’t see how that can harm anything at all.”

A lack of adequate controls and lax monitoring of expenses by airport board members created an environment in which there was “little risk of detection” for improper spending of more than $500,000 in three years, state auditor Crit Luallen said in an audit released two weeks ago.

Audit: Airport fostered culture of ’shameful’ spending

State Auditor Crit Luallen said Wednesday that Blue Grass Airport officials fostered a culture of "shameful" spending that led to more than $500,000 worth of questionable expenses over three years. She has referred her audit to criminal investigators.

The 256-page report details rampant spending by airport executives at bars, restaurants, golf courses, liquor and retail stores and online Web sites.
