Walker not a likely candidate for SD-32

After becoming the first Mayor of Bowling Green in history to win re-election earlier this year, Elaine Walker says she is not likely to seek the 32nd state Senate district seat.

As the district - which includes part of Bowling Green  - is poised to open with incumbent state Sen. Brett Guthrie (R-Bowling Green) moving on to his new role as U.S. Rep. from the 2nd Congressional District, speculation has begun as to who wants to fill the vacancy.

Davis joins Bush for West Point visit

West Point graduate and U.S. Rep. Geoff Davis (R-Hebron) accompanied President Bush and U.S. Rep. John Shimkus (R-Ill.) on Air Force One yesterday for a visit to his alma mater.

"It's my honor to let them fly on the ‘big bird,'" Bush said of the two alumni, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal.

The three flew to the New York-based military academy where Bush addressed about 1,100 senior cadets.

Guthrie retains two Lewis staffers, gets Nixon’s old office

Two staffers who previously served under retiring U.S. Rep. Ron Lewis (R-Cecilia) will be working under Lewis’ replacement in the 2nd Congressional District, state Sen. and U.S. Rep.-elect Brett Guthrie (R-Bowling Green).

Guthrie announced today that Lewis’ Chief of Staff Eric Bergren will stay on board with Guthrie in the same capacity.

Bad luck for Guthrie in office lottery

On the last day of “freshman orientation” in Washington, D.C. for incoming members of Congress, Kentucky’s sole new member, state Sen. Brett Guthrie (R-Bowling Green), got a little bit of bad news: the incoming lawmaker finished 54th in a drawing with the 53 other new members determining who gets first dibs on available office space for new members in the Longworth, Rayburn, and Cannon buildings on Capitol Hill.

Guthrie joins fellow freshmen for D.C. ‘orientation’

Congressman-elect Brett Guthrie (R-Bowling Green) is joining more than fifty fellow newcomers to the U.S. House in Washington, D.C. this week for an orientation, where they will be briefed on house ethics rules and vote for leadership positions in advance of the actual swearing-in ceremonies for the 111th Congress.

"We feel that we are coming here to be a statesman," Guthrie told the Associated Press in Washington.

Laura Bush visits Lincoln's hometown

First Lady Laura Bush will be in Kentucky for the second time in less than a month today as she pays a visit to the hometown of Abraham Lincoln, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.

Mrs. Bush will visit Abraham Lincoln Elementary School in Hodgenville today for an event closed to the public.

The trip from the First Lady comes after she cancelled an earlier planned visit in February due to incliment weather. That visit was to coincide with a celebration of Lincoln's 199th Birthday.

Questions linger about filling Guthrie’s state Senate seat

With state Sen. Brett Guthrie (R-Bowling Green) headed to Congress as the newest representative of Kentucky's 2nd Congressional District, a special election will be needed to fill his old state Senate district.

The 32nd state Senate district - which comprises Butler and Warren Counties - will officially become open upon Guthrie's formal resignation from the state legislature, though it is unclear when this will occur.
