Kentucky: Bruce Lunsford

August 6, 2009 - 03:00 pm

Deep Thought

If there was a single ounce of Democratic talent in this state, our senior U.S. Senator would be Daniel Mongiardo, capitalizing on the disarray in the RPK after junior U.S. Senator Bruce Lunsford took out the party's leadership in 2008's stunning upset.
What other fallout do you picture from this?Is Steve Beshear still Governor? If he is, who's his LG? Is the state senate flipped? Does Boswell hang on in the 2nd CD?
Discuss. I'll be waiting in the comments.

What in the world is Teresa Isaacs thinking?

I've been holding off on this post for a while, because I was almost waiting for Teresa Isaacs to come clean with us that she was only joking about running for mayor of Lexington in 2010.

But, as I can see from this fundraising event on Facebook, she is apparently serious about running again.

First of all, let me say that I have nothing personal at all against Teresa Isaacs. I voted for her against Newberry in 2006, and if given the choice of Newberry or Isaacs in 2010, I'd vote for her in a heartbeat.

But let's just take a step back and look at the reality on the ground in Lexington of 2009.

Updated: Mongiardo and Conway are likely opponents, says Bunning

U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Southgate) told reporters today that he thinks Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo (D-Hazard) and Attorney General Jack Conway (D-Louisville) will jump into the race to unseat him in 2010.

"It'll be fun to watch the other side," said Bunning. "You know that Mongiardo is going to run, you know that the Attorney General is going to run."

"You probably know Bruce Lunsford may run again," added Bunning of the 2008 Democratic Senate nominee in the Commonwealth.

McConnell placed on CREW’s post-election 'embarassing' list

U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell's (R-Louisville) re-election to a fifth term provoked more criticism from the Washington-based Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, as the group added Kentucky's Senior Senator to its latest list as one of nine of the "Most Embarassing Re-Elected Members of Congress."

Loans, self-financing, and Streisand: The last month of fundraising in the 2008 Senate race

While U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Louisville) ultimately secured a fifth term by beating millionaire businessman Bruce Lunsford by six points, the race unexpectedly drew national attention and - as fundraising data from the last month of the campaign shows - money from high-profile national backers in both parties.

Headed out the door, Bush approvals in KY as low as ever

President Bush's approval ratings in the Commonwealth have seemingly bottomed out as his second-term in the Oval Office wraps up, with a new SurveyUSA/WHAS poll finding just 32 percent of respondents approve of Bush's  job as President.

That total amounts to a low point for Bush in three and a half years' worth of polls available from SurveyUSA.

Patton in 2010? Make it 1000-to-1

Former Gov. Paul Patton evidently did not agree with a recent Louisville Courier-Journal column that included him among a list of potential Democratic candidates for the 2010 U.S. Senate race.

Political writer Joe Gerth gave 50-to-1 odds for Patton's entry into the race, but Patton told Polwatchers on Wednesday it wasn't even that close.

"Better make that 1,000-1," Patton reportedly said.
