Kentucky: Fancy Farm

Some Thoughts On Profanity-Gate

I didn't go to Fancy Farm; unfortunately, this anonablogger had work falling over the holiday of mutton and heckling, so I was stuck hitting up the twitter machine. You know, the only place you could get live coverage (thanks, KET! No check for you this year!).

Given that, I was absolutely certain that Allison Mongiardo's table dance at the tie auction was going to be the story of the weekend. I was also sure that, like most Fancy Farms, this one would be out of the news cycle in 3 hours or less.

Boy, was I wrong.

Team Jack Conway, take a bow.

Fancy Farm 2009: Plastic Spoons and Loons

It was great to be back at Fancy Farm on Saturday, the one-of-a-kind political circus where Kentucky politics tends to show its best and worst aspects every year.

This year's "episode" was largely a showcase of fresh blood from both parties. On the Republican side we had youngster Trey Grayson taking over the reigns from Jim Bunning (though still blatantly puppeted by ole Mitch). For the Democrats, the two youngsters were the squeaky clean MySpace Batman and Ken doll Jack Conway, and the eyebrow waxing hetero-hunting-coal-doctor Dan Mongiardo. Whatever the outcome of the 2010 Senate race, we're pretty much assured that at least 2 of these 3 will be among their party's leaders for the next generation.

FANCY FARM -- The Fancy Farm picnic offers an array of activity for the politically-inclined, and bingo and barbeque for those who are not. Saturday's raucous political speaking provided plenty of political fodder for the interested, including some 2011 politicking and a heated exchange from the 1st Congressional District race.

Video: Hecklers in traditional Arab garb trail Lunsford at Fancy Farm

A group of hecklers dressed in traditional Arab outfits - ostensibly "sheiks" with oil interests - trailed Democratic Senate candidate Bruce Lunsford, of Louisville, around the Fancy Farm grounds.

The group continually yelled "thanks, Bruce" - a motto of the day for Republicans attacking Lunsford for his position on domestic oil production. Lunsford opposes some expanded domestic oil exploration in areas such as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

McConnell and Lunsford are at center of Fancy Farm festivities

FANCY FARM -- "Let's try to remain at least halfway civil," said organizer Mark Wilson, kicking off the Fancy Farm picnic's political speaking.

The assertion was at least worst the effort, but in an election as polarizing as Kentucky's U.S. Senate race, it was inevitable that the notoriously active and vocal crowd would make itself heard during the Saturday afternoon event.

No Senate session tommorrow; Bunning and McConnell expected at Fancy Farm

WHAS' Mark Hebert reports that the U.S. Senate will recess tonight, freeing up Kentucky's two Senators to attend the Fancy Farm picnic, as originally planned.

U.S. Sens. Mitch McConnell (R-Louisville) and Jim Bunning (R-Southgate) initially may have had to miss the popular event if the Senate held a special Saturday session to consider energy legislation.
