Kentucky: Iraq

Three cheers for Ben Chandler!

Seriously, what is with this guy?

In 2007, Ben was the bluest of Blue Dogs, poking me in the chest and such, winning the Most Spineless KY Democrat Rootie.

Then in 2008, Ben was just phenomenal. On mountaintop removal, Iraq, FISA, endorsing Barack Obama early... it was just night and day.

But last Friday, Ben Chandler took what is probably his boldest move yet, voting for the American Clean Energy and Security Act. To be quite honest, I was shocked by this vote.

Chandler faced heavy pressure from the global warming-deniers, who made a heavy pitch to flood his office with phone calls last week.

But he didn't listen to them, instead he stood up for what was right, for the future of our state/country/world.

Lt. Col. Andrew Horne endorses Jack Conway for U.S. Senate

Let's try to see Kim Geveden call him an elite effete pussy...
Many of my friends, supporters and colleagues have asked for my opinion regarding the Democratic primary for the 2010 United States Senate seat for Jim Bunning's seat.

This is a particularly tough question because currently we have two talented, well-liked Democrats running.

I am endorsing Jack Conway for three specific reasons:

First, I believe Jack gives us the best shot of winning in 2010 especially since it is unlikely that Jim Bunning will survive his Party's nominating process. Jack will proudly fight for our progressive ideals and we all now understand Democrats cannot win by simply being safe regional candidates.

The Webb Unit

We all remember the Friedman Unit, right? The Mustache of Doom would continually push the goal post forward on Iraq, saying the glorious victory was just 6 months away. Over and over again.

Well, as Yellow Dog suggested in the comments, we now have the Webb Unit.

"just 60 or 90 more days, and construction will start, I swear!"

Grow the 'stache Dudley, you know you want to!

More Sadness

A soldiers was murdered and another wounded, this time on our own ground:
A 23-year-old man upset about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan opened fire from his truck at two soldiers standing outside a military recruiting station here on Monday morning, killing one private and wounding another, the police said.
....
The dead soldier was identified as Pvt. William A. Long, 23, of Conway, about 30 miles north of Little Rock. The other victim, Pvt. Quinton Ezeagwula, 18, was in stable condition at Baptist Medical Center, Chief Stuart Thomas of the Little Rock Police Department said.
No words.

Congressman Awesome

I noticed something about B&P this weekend. We hardly ever write about John Yarmuth anymore. When I began my KY blogging phase seriously in early 2007, I wrote constantly about all of the great stuff that Congressman Yarmuth was doing. He was constantly standing up for our principles and standing up to President Bush, refusing to apologize one inch the entire way. From Iraq to FISA to Article I, John was everything that we want out of our Congresspersons.

Along the way, Yarmy showed Chandler the path to righteousness, then last Fall showed Anne Northup the path to political extinction with a 19-point beatdown.

GOP Group Efforts At 'Re-Branding' The Party Miss The Bigger Picture

EDITORIAL:

Politico is reporting that a group of 14 congressional republicans met with the goal of re-branding the GOP in an effort to stem what they perceive is a party in decline.

Top Republican leaders Thursday offered a first look at plans to remake their party with a renewed focus on the bread-and-butter issues of domestic policy.

The National Council for a New America launched with an open letter that’s notable for what it leaves out: The issues that a large segment of the party’s base are most passionate about. The letter, signed by 14 congressional Republican leaders, makes no mention of same-sex marriage, immigration — legal or otherwise — or abortion.

When Demonization Fails

For 30 years, Democrats were at the mercy of GOP demonization. Even when dems didn't literally faint and cower in a corner, whimpering, whenever repugs called them liberals, the effect was the same.

Democrats lost the White House, the Senate, the House, the states to repugs who couldn't recognize a Constitutional principle or articulate a rational policy to save their lives.

Even Bill Clinton survived only because he pacified the repugs by sacrificing the middle class to the piranhas of Wall Street.

Yes, Barack Obama was a once-in-a-century candidate, but the repugs are caught in feedback loop of self-destruction because they finally took demonization too far.

Texas is the New France

Yeah, that's right. Read it again: Texas is the new France. This have nothing to do with any cultural similarity between the two, only that they've become the whipping boy of mediocre to lousy comedians everywhere.

Remember during the start of the Iraq War? Back when we were deciding who was going to save the Democratic party--John Edwards or Wes Clark? Every Republican and every media member who thinks their job is to comment on tie-knots and forehead wrinkles (if you feel offended Maureen Dowd, it's only because you're a fantastic waste of sperm and egg that somehow got a press pass: no offense, okay?) decided they'd pass dumb jokes about the French.
