Kentucky: Jack Conway

KDP mingling and uncomfortable questions

OK, I'll pick up where I left off on the KDP rally liveblog on Saturday...

As for the speeches, there wasn't anything specifically noteworthy. What was of note was that each of the speakers didn't just praise Steve Beshear, but they gushed and gushed about him. A little obvious what was going on, and a little more glaring because Dan Mongiardo chose to split right beforehand so he didn't have to go through the awkwardness of this.

When Ben Chandler spoke, a guy standing right next to him at the podium held up a "Fix Healthcare, it's Broken" sign. Which Ben Chandler's free government healthcare probably didn't appreciate.

Conway campaign smacks Mongiardo upside the head

Check out the juicy juice from their new press release.

On Mongiardo's last place in fundraising and the polls (to Conway, Grayson, and Paul):
“It is hard to spin being dead last. They can spin, blame and point fingers, but the fact remains that Dan Mongiardo is last in money and last in polls,” added Riddle. "One must wonder when the Mongiardo campaign gets dizzy from all their spinning."
Ouch.
Mongiardo has spent weeks hiding from the press because he refuses to answer questions regarding what he said about the Governor. It is time for Mongiardo to “man up” as the Herald Leader editorialized.
Yep.
80% of Jack Conway’s fundraising comes from Kentuckians.

Lexington Airport thieves soon headed to the slammer

Excellent news this morning, as 4 of the corrupt thieves who looted us at the Lexington Airport have been indicted:
Former Blue Grass Airport executive director Michael A. Gobb and three of his managers were indicted on felony theft charges Tuesday. The charges stem from hundreds of thousands of dollars in questionable expenses the four men billed to the airport.

***

Gobb faces nine theft charges. Also charged were John Rhodes, the former director of administration and finance, with six charges; John Coon, the airport's former director of operations, and John P. Slone, who was director of planning and development, with one each. The airport board forced the four men to resign last winter.

LHL not letting "Fuck it All" Gate die

Missed this from yesterday, but the Herald-Leader isn't letting Dan Mongiardo's pathetic "political shenanigans" excuse go.
It's time for Senate candidate Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo to man up.

We're talking about the recordings of him that keep popping up on the Internet. Yes, they were surreptitiously taped, are obviously spliced and have been distributed anonymously. As such, they are both high-tech dirty trick and political comedy in the old Kentucky tradition.

Yet some of Mongiardo's statements, which he has not denied making, are provocative no matter the context.

What did he mean when he said that being Gov. Steve Beshear's lieutenant governor is like "being married to a whore"? Or that "the only difference between (former Gov.

Hot/Awkward KDP livebloggin/tweeting tomorrow!

I'll be in Lexington tomorrow afternoon at the big KDP rally featuring Steve Beshear, Dan Mongiardo, Jack Conway, Ben Chandler and John Yarmuth.
It starts at 4:00, and should be awkward as hell, what with Dan Mongiardo touting the endorsement of the "SOB" "whore" "worst KY Governor ever" Steve Beshear.
If the wi-fi is working, come here for the live snark. If not, check out the B&P twitterfeed here.

What you won't find in Mongiardo's end-of-quarter fundraising email on Wednesday

It appears that half of the entire campaign strategy for Dan Mongiardo this summer has been trying to blow up Jack Conway's use of the word hell and bitch (Vapors!). From some typical campaign emails:
"It's clear that Jack Conway's actions at Fancy Farm are still resonating with Kentuckians and further proof that he is out of touch with Kentucky values."and...
"Jack's outburst at Fancy Farm calls into question his judgment, but ultimately we will be judged on the positions we take and the values we stand up for."Well, with the end of this fundraising quarter Wednesday, do you want to take a guess what the Vegas odds are for this line to show up again in his fundraising pitch tomorrow?

I'd say the odds of CentrePointe getting built are better.

Better come up with a new campaign strategy, Dan...

Dan Mongiardo sends southern belles reeling onto their fainting couches all across the Bluegrass

US Senate candidate Dan Mongiardo sent out an email today touting the "support" of Governor Steve Beshear for his candidacy:
The summer may be over, but for us at the campaign it couldn't have ended better. Last week Gov. Steve Beshear joined Daniel for an event in Northern Kentucky where he voiced his strong support of Daniel. Beshear said:

"I'm looking forward to having Daniel Mongiardo as our next United States Senator. He has proven himself time and time again to be a person who not only understands people, but relates to people and is one of the people...He's demonstrated leadership - the kind of leadership we need in Washington.

Damnit...

Of course.

No sooner do I finish heaping praise on Jack Conway for finally doing something aggressive and populist-y than he goes and proves one of my more significant fears 100% correct. Jake and Rick Redding have all the info you need to know on the Cordish opinion, but if you read them both, you see the hell of this opinion: it's playing to both crowds. Like the Mayor, want to protect him (perhaps because he was an early endorser for your Senate campaign)? Emphasize that nothing illegal happened. Upset over what was pretty clearly government waste and giveaway at a time that the city has nothing to spare? Emphasize that it was morally wrong.

Take Your Job And Shove It

You know, I think I've been pretty hard on Jack Conway. Compared his Q1 fundraising to W declaring "Mission Accomplished"? Check. Called his press operation a one-trick pony? Check. Ripped him up and down for a weak response to an opponent's contrived reaction to his use of profanity? Check.

The list goes on; the truth is, though, that Conway, for all of his mistakes, has got nothing on Daniel Mongiardo in the "sucking at life" department. He hasn't had to for a couple of months, either, but I'm glad to see that period is coming to an end.
