Presidential voting shifts evident in Appalachian counties and elsewhere

Much can be said after looking at the Presidential returns from last week's general election in Kentucky. While President-elect Barack Obama won a solid victory nationwide, Republican nominee John McCain won the Commonwealth by over 16 points - a resounding show of Republican strength in the face of Democratic gains elsewhere.

Breaking down the numbers, however, provides evidence that may give a moral boost to both parties.

Massachussetts pols rally support in Senate race

In the last two days, two high-profile politicians from Massachussetts have lent their support to the candidates on either side of Kentucky's U.S. Senate race. Yesterday, it was former Gov. and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney dispatching an e-mail to supporters of incumbent U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Louisville). Today, U.S. Sen. and former Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry sent a similar e-mail on behalf of Democratic candidate Bruce Lunsford.

Today's convention schedule

The third day of the Democratic National Convention will be called to order at 5:00 PM EST on Wednesday, with a theme of "Securing America's Future."

The day will begin with the nominating process for President, including nominating speeches for U.S. Sens. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Barack Obama (D-Ill.), followed by a roll call vote.

The headline speaker will be vice presidential nominee, U.S. Sen. Joe Biden (D-Del.).

More shuffling in Lunsford camp

Shortly after spokeswoman Allison Haley voluntarily left the campaign of Democratic Senate nominee Bruce Lunsford, more changes are occurring for the Louisville businessman's effort to unseat incumbent U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Louisville).

Joe Gerth of the Louisville Courier-Journal reports Lunsford has brought Michael Donilon, of Blizzard Communication, on board as its new media consultant.

Yarmuth adds staff, including Obama adviser

Veterans of the presidential campaigns of U.S. Sens. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) and John Kerry (D-Mass.) are the newest additions to U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth's (D-Louisville) staff for his first re-election campaign.

Maryland native Dan Geldon will serve as campaign manager for Yarmuth, fresh off of a bid as an adviser for the National Youth Vote program for Obama.

Geldon previously was executive director for the College Democrats of America and worked as managing editor of the Harvard Law and Policy Review during his legal studies.
