Recollections of a Fundraiser of Yore and Thoughts on Son-of-a-Bitchgate

Dan Mongiardo’s fake puritanical outrage over Attorney General Jack Conway’s recent, shocking use of profanity at the Fancy Farm picnic brought back memories for me of a Democratic State Senate Caucus fundraiser that I and several other UK College Democrats attended some years ago. As you will remember, this was two offices ago for Dan Mongiardo, back when he was still a lowly state senator who had recently lost the last race for US Senate against Jim Bunning, and as such he was expected to allow the rest of the caucus and the attendees at the fundraiser to bask in the glow of his political fame.

Mongiardo’s ICG donations even worse than they appear

Last week we shared with you how Dan Mongiardo’s campaign chest is full of the mountaintop removing International Coal Group, whose executives all maxed out to Lt. Dan in the first quarter. A day after the EPA declaration to crack down on mountaintop removal and Mongiardo’s desperate pleas to Washington, the Louisville Army Corps of Engineers decided to ignore the EPA and announce that ICG would be allowed to bury 1.7 more miles of streams in Leslie County. The ICG money then started flowing into Mongiardo’s headquarters.

Ain’t dirty politics grand?

Well, once you look into the background of ICG and their donors, the story looks even worse.

Happy (late) Birthday, Barefoot and Progressive!

Yes, yes, I'm late and times flies, but I felt like pointing out that March 10th was our one year anniversary here at Barefoot and Progressive. In my first post, I laid out the "mission", so to speak, for this blog, and... well, I wouldn't take back a word of it and I think we've stayed pretty true.

Brutal honesty. Brutal offensiveness. That's... what we do.

I'd like to thank Dudley Webb, Jim Newberry, John McCain and Ken Ham for their excellence in douchbaggery... I don't know what I'd rant about without you.

I'd also like to thank Sarah Palin and Daniel Solzman for.... well, just for being you.

And of course, Terri Whitehouse and David Schankula for classing up the joint.

And our dear, dear readers. May the Pasketti Monster's noodly appendage always be on your shoulder, guiding you down the righteous path. Thanks!

Headed out the door, Bush approvals in KY as low as ever

President Bush's approval ratings in the Commonwealth have seemingly bottomed out as his second-term in the Oval Office wraps up, with a new SurveyUSA/WHAS poll finding just 32 percent of respondents approve of Bush's  job as President.

That total amounts to a low point for Bush in three and a half years' worth of polls available from SurveyUSA.

Presidential voting shifts evident in Appalachian counties and elsewhere

Much can be said after looking at the Presidential returns from last week's general election in Kentucky. While President-elect Barack Obama won a solid victory nationwide, Republican nominee John McCain won the Commonwealth by over 16 points - a resounding show of Republican strength in the face of Democratic gains elsewhere.

Breaking down the numbers, however, provides evidence that may give a moral boost to both parties.
