Mongiardo is campaigning on your dime

Dan Mongiardo's campaign royally fucked up today (see here, here and here), and the Conway campaign is now pouncing. Here's the video and press release... enjoy:

Daniel Mongiardo Caught Tricking Taxpayers on Halloween!

"I know it's Halloween Eve, but this is SCARY! What does Mongiardo have to hide?" says Conway Campaign.

(Louisville - KY) Today, after Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo sent out an official media advisory (see attached PDF) using state email and letterhead from the Office of the Lt. Governor, he barred Conway Campaign staffers from attending the events and kicked them out of the meetings.

The events were touted as places where Dan Mongiardo would discuss health care reform and proposed legislation.

Mongiardo issues press release, then bars press from event

So, a little update on Jake's earlier post about Mongiardo today.

As he said, Mongiardo issued a press release to everyone in Kentucky announcing that he would speak about healthcare reform in London and Lexington today. However, they kicked out a Conway staffer at the London event, saying that it was a private event, even though they issued press releases and used state resources to put this out.

Well, I decided to attend the Lexington event, as I recieved the press release too and am a member of the dirty librul blogger press.

As soon as I stuck my head in the door, a Mongiardo campaign staffer saw me and whispered to a woman named Angela Underwood.

A New Arena?

For the past couple years, there's been talk of a new arena in downtown Lexington. The parties involved are still studying this, but a report is supposed to come out next month. To that end, Andrew Battista recently explored the subject, comparing Lexington's new arena plans with other cities. Agree or disagree with him, it's a great read.

Here's just a brief taste from the introduction:
Lexington taxpayers should be suspicious next month when the London sports marketing firm IMG/ISG releases a feasibility study to determine whether or not Lexington can replace Rupp Arena, which is now 33 years old. The study, authorized by the Lexington Center Corporation and endorsed by the University of Kentucky, will detail the logistics behind financing and building an arena that, for many people, seems to be superfluous.

Mitch McConnell is still a giant hypocrite on federal spending

Lee Fang at Think Progress makes a great find today on Mitch's little adventure into Kentucky yesterday to the chemical weapon depot in Richmond. Mitch was of course crowing about all of the federal dough he helped direct to it's cleanup project in the 2010 budget, which he said will create 600 jobs for Kentuckians. No surprise there, as he ran his entire re-election campaign last year on his love of pork.

But the federal spending that Mitch doesn't like is in Obama's stimulus bill, which he has repeatedly said is a "failure" and should be "diverted".

Oh, one little problem with that, Mitch:
However, McConnell conveniently forgot to mention that even more additional funds for facility construction were awarded through the stimulus.

Lexington = London During the War?

Last Tuesday, Mayor Newberry honored the veterans of World War II at the city council meeting, ahead of the anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (June 6).

There were three veterans in attendance and to each of them, Mayor Newberry gave a certificate honoring their service. Two of the three took their certificates with a smile and a nod, but the other, Frank Cassidy, used the opportunity to address the City Council.

He had them in stitches. Perhaps the funniest moment in City Council History:

Later in the week, on Thursday, Dudley Webb addressed the city's business leaders, outlining to them the many different but unfulfilled promises he has for funding the CentrePointe project.
