Introducing the next Senator from KY, Jack Conway

(crossposted at DailyKos, go recommend it!)

I'm thrilled to report that the next Senator from the state of Kentucky has just announced his candidacy this morning. Our state's 11-year nightmare of Jim Bunning is about to end in November 2010, and here is the man that will end it.

Meet KY Attorney General Jack Conway.

As you can see in his announcement video on his site, Conway will have his official in-person rally to kick off his campaign Monday in Louisville. I can't go into all of the details now, but let's just say that Ben Chandler, Crit Luallen, John Yarmuth, and about every big KY Democrat past and present whose name isn't Steve Beshear will be there.

What do Glenn Beck, Karl Rove and Dan Mongiardo have in common?

What do you call a person that speaks at a convention with Karl Rove, Ollie North, Mitt Romney and Glenn Beck as they they smear Democrats as people who will come into your home and take away your guns? For an organization that makes its living off of smearing Democrats and electing Republicans?

Dan Mongiardo.

GOP analyst: Bunning providing ‘cannon fodder’ for Democrats

Republican insiders are hedging their bets on the fate of Sen. Jim Bunning’s 2010 re-election bid as the rift between Kentucky's junior senator and GOP leaders widens.

“The Republican Party and the leadership in the Republican Party needs to be more vigilant in holding up leaders who stray off the reservation in actions and words,” said Phil Musser, a GOP political consultant who advised Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign and Matt Blunt and Bobby Jindal’s gubernatorial campaigns.

Massachussetts pols rally support in Senate race

In the last two days, two high-profile politicians from Massachussetts have lent their support to the candidates on either side of Kentucky's U.S. Senate race. Yesterday, it was former Gov. and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney dispatching an e-mail to supporters of incumbent U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Louisville). Today, U.S. Sen. and former Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry sent a similar e-mail on behalf of Democratic candidate Bruce Lunsford.

Grayson sees Palin giving ticket appeal to some Clinton voters

DENVER -- In Minnesota for next week’s Republican National Convention, Secretary of State Trey Grayson (R-Richwood) told PolitickerKY.com that many of his colleagues expected a different pick for U.S. Sen. Jon McCain’s (R-Ariz.) presidential ticket.

“Most people up here thought it would be Romney or Pawlenty,” said Grayson, referring to two oft-rumored names: former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

SurveyUSA tries VP tickets in KY

Few of the rumored Vice Presidential picks the now-presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Senator Barack Obama (D-Ill.), could add to his ticket would help him much in the Commonwealth of Kentucky in November, according to a new SurveyUSA poll.

SurveyUSA compiled public opinion figures on sixteen potential ticket match-ups from May 16 and May 18 - before Senator Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) handed Obama a 35 point defeat in Kentucky on May 20 and prior to Obama's attainment of the requisite delegates to clinch the nomination.

The data was released yesterday.

NRA in Louisville: Piling on Obama

LOUISVILLE -- Even though today's National Rifle Association Leadership Forum took place in Kentucky -- a state where presidential candidate and U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) leads her primary opponent, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), by 27 points in recent polls -- it was Obama who got the "presumptive nominee treatment" at the forum.

Of course, that treatment means Republicans did not cease attacking him for the entirety of the day's events.

McConnell Campaign Takes Shape and Awaits Opposition

The campaign team seeking to re-elect four-term Republican Senator Mitch McConnell features some familiar names from the Senator's past races as well as Republican operatives with success elsewhere in Kentucky.

Long-time McConnell pollster Jan Van Lohuizen of Houston-based Voter Consumer Research will continue to handle public opinion work for the campaign. Van Lohuizen also served as a primary pollster for President George W. Bush's re-election campaign in 2004 and Mitt Romney's 2008 presidential bid.
