NRA defeated, no thanks to some new Democratic Senators

In between the Birthers going mainstream, Sarah Palin speaking in beat poetry, and Senator Beanball finally deciding to call in a reliever, overlooked was an unsuccessful effort by the NRA that's rather mind-blowing: John Thune wanted to force every state in the country to recognize the gun laws of Texas and Alaska.

Seriously... the same Republican Party that screams Socialism! and Tyranny! at the first sign of the federal government... you know... existing, had one of its bright young stars introduce a bill designed to overturn state laws.

Now why would they do that? Oh, right...

When this amendment went down, it was the first time in five years that the NRA didn’t get what it wanted.

***THE ARMED CITIZEN*** An Every Friday Feature

The residents of an apartment complex say their typically safe
neighborhood had fallen victim to a rash of break-ins. Crime reached
its zenith when someone broke into an apartment occupied by a woman and
her children. The woman retreated to her bedroom with the children,
locked the door and armed herself with a handgun. According to police,
when the suspect approached the bedroom door, the woman fired a single
shot. The suspect was found outside the complex suffering from a
gunshot wound. He was placed under armed guard at the hospital. (Tyler Morning Telegraph, Tyler, TX, 02/03/09)

***THE ARMED CITIZEN*** An Every Friday Feature

According to police, a home-owner pulled into his driveway and watched
in astonishment as a burglar carried items out of his back door. He
confronted the burglar, who drew a knife and sliced the homeowner's
arm. During the ensuing wrestling match, the homeowner tossed the
burglar into the pool for a February swim. He retrieved a rifle before
the burglar could exit the water and ordered him to stand in the middle
of the pool until police arrived. (The State, Columbia, SC, 02/21/09)

Introducing the next Senator from KY, Jack Conway

(crossposted at DailyKos, go recommend it!)

I'm thrilled to report that the next Senator from the state of Kentucky has just announced his candidacy this morning. Our state's 11-year nightmare of Jim Bunning is about to end in November 2010, and here is the man that will end it.

Meet KY Attorney General Jack Conway.

As you can see in his announcement video on his site, Conway will have his official in-person rally to kick off his campaign Monday in Louisville. I can't go into all of the details now, but let's just say that Ben Chandler, Crit Luallen, John Yarmuth, and about every big KY Democrat past and present whose name isn't Steve Beshear will be there.

NRA in Louisville: McCain addresses grievances with conservatives; warns on Dems

LOUISVILLE - The remarks of presumptive Republican presidential nominee and U.S. John McCain (R-Ariz.) at today's National Rifle Association Leadership Forum not surprisingly revolved around gun rights.

The senator has not had a perfect record with the NRA, and has come under their criticism in the past for supporting background checks for firearms purchased at gun shows. He addressed this history today and stuck to his position on the matter.

NRA in Louisville: Piling on Obama

LOUISVILLE -- Even though today's National Rifle Association Leadership Forum took place in Kentucky -- a state where presidential candidate and U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) leads her primary opponent, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), by 27 points in recent polls -- it was Obama who got the "presumptive nominee treatment" at the forum.

Of course, that treatment means Republicans did not cease attacking him for the entirety of the day's events.

NRA in Louisville: Heller takes center stage

LOUISVILLE -- The National Rifle Association's Leadership Forum held in Louisville today falls amid a period of limbo for those on either side of the gun control issue. As gun rights advocates gather for the NRA's annual weekend meeting in Kentucky, the United States Supreme Court is considering a case that is seen by legal analysts to be one of the first genuine tests of the Second Amendment.
