More on UK's midnight strike force against Wildcat Coal

Just got this in my inbox from the students responsible for the guerrilla sign shenanigans against Lee Todd and his Wildcat Coal buddies.
Midnight Activists Strike Against Wildcat Coal Lodge

In response to the naming of the new “Wildcat Coal Lodge” students staged a multi-banner drop for campus. This drop was intended to illustrate the corporatization of campus. For example, a banner reading “Your Ad Here” was hung at Memorial Hall.

Overall there were 6 banners and one poster throughout campus. These banners were hung at 4am and were removed by 5:30am.

The fact that they are no longer there illustrates that Student voices have been stifled yet again. Goodbye institute of higher learning, hello UK: corporate billboard. Here are the pics:

UK students not going quietly on Wildcat Coal Lodge

Guerrilla activism, FTW.
Someone unhappy with the newly approved Wildcat Coal Lodge hung banners on the University of Kentucky campus early Wednesday, but few saw them because they were quickly taken down.

The theme: UK is for sale.

A banner across the pillars of Memorial Hall said, “YOUR AD HERE! Call: 257-1701.”

That’s UK President Lee Todd’s office number.

Another sign, over the Main Building, proclaimed it to be the “Ball Homes Building.” Mira Ball, who is the chairwoman of the school’s Board of Trustees, also is the chief financial officer of Ball Homes Inc.More signs, to come...

The Wildcat Coal Lodge Fiasco

You know how well political/industry propaganda mixes with college athletics, right? Right?

Well, the giant Wildcat Coal Lodge fiasco hit national last night, with Rachel Maddow doing a segment on it:

Yes, and this was on the same day that the KY Kernel, UK's STUDENT NEWSPAPER, allowed a crusty old coal industry hack to write an industry propaganda column for the paper, showing how giving Wildcat Lodge this stupid stupid name is like the greatest thing ever. (Though my friend Kim got to write a rational response)

But today, with no great surprise, the UK Board of Trustees

We'll Run Government Like A Business!

If you'd seen me before President Obama's speech tonight, you'd have thought I watching a UK Basketball game. I was pumping my fist, smacking my hands together, muttering "Dear God, don't disappoint me."

The speech itself was strong, and while it didn't include everything I wanted (a hardline on the public option; a government-subsidized gambling pool about who cries more, Glen Beck or Tammy-Faye Baker; a mandatory weekly viewing of a Daniel Solzman stand-up routine to show that non-laughter is the best non-medicine) he was genuinely moving in a way he's not been since the campaign ended.

But lost in the post-game analysis (which after all matters more than the speech in these times) was the most significant aspect of his speech: it marks the end of faith in the Bush administration.

Where do UK students stand on health reform?

According to the Kernel, they're divided (what did you expect?):

The words “health care” and “death panels” have been swarming national headlines lately. While some UK students feel strongly about the issue, others are not even aware of the current reform.

“I listened to talk radio over the summer, but I haven’t done any personal research,” said Claire Heitzman, a classics sophomore.

Those who do know of the reform believe, good or bad, change will come.

“I think all the good doctors are going to move away because the government isn’t going to pay them what they deserve,” said James Isaac, a mining engineering freshman.

That's just a sampling of the idiocy that is prevalent at our state's flagship school. Read the whole article and see for yourself. Please either check out the original article and comment, or click here to write a letter to the editor.

Lost Dog, Found Dog

So... The Dame is dead. And what once was a cultural center point (without the e's) of Lexington now alternates between a giant mudpit and a small lake.

But hope is on the way! Not just for music in Lexington, but for an entire neighborhood that can thrive, while holding on to and attracting young talent that any city needs in order thrive.

Meet the new Buster's, opening September 4th in the Distillery District:

It seems like most bloggers and media are agreeing that the music hall is “perfect” – thus far. Being hailed already as one of the best venues in the state by some, and others have said, “Headliners, watch out.

Correcting Stupid with Stupid

In the wake of yesterday's stupidest piece of journalism in the last 100 years, the good folks at Investors Business Daily had the unenviable task of writing a correction:

“Editor’s Note: This version corrects the original editorial which implied that physicist Stephen Hawking, a professor at the University of Cambridge, did not live in the UK.”

Of course, the only correction that could have possibly been up to snuff would have been:

"We're sorry, but the author of this article is really fucking stupid. They no longer work with us, and have been banished from journalism for eternity"

Yarmuth gives shout out to David Williams

On Friday's broadcast of "The Francene Show" on Louisville's WHAS-AM radio, U.S. Rep John Yarmuth stressed that Senate President David Williams now "holds the fate of Kentucky racing in his own hands". Yarmuth was of course making note of Williams continued resistance against gambling slots at racetracks, an issue that is likely to be on the agenda if the KY legislation is called into session this June. Many have noted, like Yarmuth, that many horse owners and trainers are now seeking the larger purses often found at racetracks that offer video lottery gambling. This has forced local tracks, such as Churchill Downs, to cut races due to not enough horses racing.

Former KY Resident and UK Professor files lawsuit in New Orleans

Jeremy Kerr, a friend of mine and former Sociology instructor at the University of Kentucky has filed a lawsuit in New Orleans, his new home, alleging gender discrimination after he wore a skirt to a court appointment and was asked to leave by the police officer on duty. Jeremy is notorious in Lexington for his slightly off-key attire, but this seems like a cut and dry case to me. Oh and just so you know...the delightful, intimidating little plaque in the vestibule of Pazzo's is there because of Dr. Kerr.

Keep up the fight, Jeremy!

Comedy Lovers Rejoice!

Ali vs. Frasier

Godzilla vs. Mothra

Sophie's son vs. Sophie's daughter

Solzman vs. Cottonpants

Yes, friends, it's on. Solzman and I are still ironing out the details (Date, venue, stakes) but we've tentatively agreed to a standup challenge that will take place later in the summer. For those of you not in the know, Daniel Solzman is a Kentucky comedian best known for his musical tribute to Kentucky Ba-ba-basketball called "Lazy Tuesday." Look it up on YouTube if you don't mind bleeding out of your eyes and ears simultaneously

Not only does he have an impressive air jumpshot, and the ability to make it through an entire verse with checking his lyric sheet only twice, but he's also an astute political commentator who drew the ire of many here when he said that abortion should be outlawed because "sluts got to pay the price.
