Teabags of Stupidity the topping of choice at Gattitown

Thought the birther/deather/teabagger crowd couldn't get any crazier?

Guess again.
Call it the Pizza Protest.

A Lexington woman has established a Facebook group urging parents who are either keeping their children out of school today or pulling them out before a scheduled TV speech by President Barack Obama to join her for lunch at Gattitown on Nicholasville Road.

The event, listed at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=125720529577, is being promoted by Lexington businesswoman Mica Sims as a chance for parents who object to the Obama school speech to have lunch and socialize.

The lunch is at noon, when Obama is scheduled to make his televised speech. Fayette county schools spokeswoman Lisa Deffendall said that since the speech will only be 15 minutes and the school district is providing an alternate activity for students, being absent from school for the whole day will be considered an unexcused absence.

Ron Paul endorses his son for US Senate (shocker)

Grab the popcorn, because primary season in Kentucky is going to be a circus:

My son, Rand, has helped me campaign since he was 11. He and his brothers and sisters and nieces and nephews have literally knocked on thousands of doors for me.

At the age of 21, Rand debated Phil Gramm in my US Senate race in my stead. During the Presidential election he traveled to ten states giving speeches for me. He appeared on hundreds of radio programs for me. I am grateful for his contribution and very proud of the thoughtful, principled man Rand has become.

So, it is with great enthusiasm that I endorse my son Rand’s venture into electoral politics.

Jack Conway's giant rally at 4:30 today

If you're in Louisville today, I highly suggest heading down to the Ali Center at 4:30. Soon to be Senator Jack Conway will formally announce his candidacy for US Senate, along with supporters Crit Luallen, John Yarmuth, and Ben Chandler. Oh, and some special guests that you WON'T want to miss. Trust me.

I'm in the Ville, so I might be liveblogging it, but if not, I'll have a report up on the festivities soon afterwards.

In the meantime, throw some turkee Jack's way.

McConnell objects to revised auto bailout plan

U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Louisville) announced on the Senate floor this morning that the auto industry bailout package agreed to by Congressional Democratic leadership and the White House did not meet the requirements he said were necessary for the support of skeptical Republicans.

"We reviewed it closely to see if it meets the criteria that I have laid out repeatedly for taxpayer-protections and an effective strategy for securing the long-term viability of these companies," said McConnell. "In the end, I concluded that it does not."

McConnell placed on CREW’s post-election 'embarassing' list

U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell's (R-Louisville) re-election to a fifth term provoked more criticism from the Washington-based Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, as the group added Kentucky's Senior Senator to its latest list as one of nine of the "Most Embarassing Re-Elected Members of Congress."

Loans, self-financing, and Streisand: The last month of fundraising in the 2008 Senate race

While U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Louisville) ultimately secured a fifth term by beating millionaire businessman Bruce Lunsford by six points, the race unexpectedly drew national attention and - as fundraising data from the last month of the campaign shows - money from high-profile national backers in both parties.

Clinton frames McConnell as a Bush ally during Louisville appearance

LOUISVILLE - Calling U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Louisville) the "chief obstructionist in the United States Senate," U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) rallied last minute support for businessman Bruce Lunsford's (D-Louisville) and had few kind words for the four-term incumbent at an afternoon event today.

"He stands in the way of most of the agenda that will help make life better in Kentucky," said Clinton of McConnell.

Democrats expect little negative impact on state House candidates from Obama

While acknowledging presidential election years have often been challenging for Democratic state House candidates, the leaders of Kentucky's House Democratic Caucus said this year they did not think their down ballot candidates would be impacted by presidential politics.

"The top-of-the-ticket presidential years are very hard for us because of Kentucky not being play...so that's always made us extra cautious going into presidential years," said Caucus director Jonathan Hurst.

Senate race ad round-up: Labor money and a swift boater drop in

Both campaigns and outside interest groups continue to pour funds into advertising in Kentucky's U.S. Senate race between U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Louisville) and businessman Bruce Lunsford (D-Louisville).

One new television spot targeting McConnell is funded by a relatively new 527 group known as "Citizens for Strength and Security." The group is up with a thirty-second ad hitting McConnell on many of the economic issues - such as support for NAFTA and CAFTA - included in earlier spots from the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and other outside groups.
