State Senate seats to watch in 2008

Open seats:

District 7, Southern Cumberland County: Sen. Lynn Bromley, D-South Portland, is termed out. Bromley safely won the seat in 2006, but replaced a Republican who had been termed out, though in 2000 she won the seat by nearly 4,000 votes.

Prediction: Safe Democrat

District 10, Northern Cumberland County (Freeport): Senate President Beth Edmonds, D-Freeport, is termed out. Edmonds safely won the seat in 2006, but replaced a Republican who had been termed out. In 2000 she narrowly beat her Republican challenger by just over 100 votes. Current Rep. Stan Gerzofsky, D-Brunswick, has already announced his candidacy for this seat.

Prediction: Likely Democrat

District 11, Northern Cumberland County (Yarmouth): Sen. Karl Turner, R-Cumberland, is termed out. His Democratic challenger in 2006 gave him a good run, Turner won by just under 2,000 votes. In 2000, he beat the Democratic incumbent Carol Kontos by just over 1,000 votes. Kontos had served one term and was preceded by a Republican. Gerald Davis, a Falmouth Republican, and Jeanne Hulit, a Falmouth Democrat, have already announced their candidacies for this seat.

Prediction: Toss-Up

District 16, Lewiston: Sen. Peggy Rotundo, D-Lewiston, is termed out. A Democrat has held this seat since at least 1997. In both 2000 and 2006 she won by about 5,000 votes. Currently, Reps. Margaret Craven and Elaine Makas, both Lewiston Democrats, are eyeing her seat.

Prediction: Safe Democrat

District 22, Knox County: Sen. Christine Savage, R-Union, is termed out. This seat has traditionally been held by a Republican, except for the four terms former Sen. Chellie Pingree, D-North Haven, held the seat. Savage won by 900 votes in 2006, and 2,000 votes in 2000. Current Rep. David Miramant, D-Camden has already announced his candidacy, and current Rep. Christopher Rector, R-Thomaston, said he is seriously considering running.

Prediction: Toss-up

District 35, Northern Aroostook County: Sen. John Martin, D-Eagle Lake, is termed out. A Democrat has held this seat since at least 1996. Martin won by about 3,500 votes in 2006 and about 6,000 votes in 2000.

Prediction: Safe Democrat

Other races to watch:

District 2, York County: Third-term Sen. Richard Nass, R-Acton, won by about 1,500 votes in 2006. Richard Burns, a Berwick Democrat, has already announced he will seek this seat.
