Rematch in the Making: Sawyer v. Perry

Tom Sawyer, a Republican from Bangor, has emailed supporters letting them know that he will be seeking the Senate Seat in district 32 (Bangor and Hermon). Sawyer held that seat until 2004, where he lost a close election against the current occupant – Senator Joe Perry (D-Bangor). Senator Perry is chair of the Legislature’s taxation committee, and is expected to seek a third term.

The Sawyer announcement, comes just a few days after Mary Andrews (R-York), told a reporter in York County that she planned on running for the Senate seat she have up in 2006. The Sawyer and Andrews announcements are good news for the Senate Republicans, where it looks as though they are heading in to this election cycle with a 2 or 3 seat advantage.

The Senate democrats, however, always put up a good fight and it is expected that they have a number of good candidates waiting in the wings.
