Hallowell Republicans haven’t been active in years. At tonight’s (Friday’s) caucuses, however, city and county committees were able to attract some new blood.
Of the 30 voters who came, 16 voted for Mitt Romney, six voted for John McCain, five voted for Ron Paul, two left their cards blank and one was uncommitted. Nobody voted for Mike Huckabee.
In addition, they were able to fill almost all of the city and county committee seats.
“Sometimes when you’re getting people involved in civic activities, getting people to step forward is like pulling teeth,” said Chuck Mahaleris, a field service staffer for Susan Collins.
The caucus got off to a rocky start. Too many people wanted to be delegates, and no one was sure of the rules to select them. Once they got the Roberts Rules of Order in place, however, things were set.
In the end, they all applauded convener Janis Cross. She said she had a week to prepare for the caucus, and did so by reading materials provided by the Maine Republican Party.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve taken a responsibility like this,” Cross said.
As for the turnout? “This is unbelievable,” Cross said.
Sarah McNaughton of Hallowell was among the Romney fans. This was her first caucus.
“I thought it was an interesting way to get involved at a new level, instead of waiting (until November),” she said.
She lived in Massachusetts, and said she agrees with Romney’s policies and economic values.
Michael Dye of Hallowell voted for McCain.
“I like his ability to cross party lines and get things done,” he said.
