How does a guy go from being a Dennis Kucinich delegate at the Democratic National Convention in 2004 - to collecting signatures to run against Senator Collins in a Republican primary?
That’s the word from at least two folks who attended the Portland caucus, as they were greeted by Mr. Cohen – petition in hand. Hey, Republicans like to say “It’s a big tent”, Mr. Cohen is simply checking on the veracity of that statement.
One of the issues Mr. Cohen will need to attend to during his campaign are a few of the postings at maineindymedia.org. This one which was created just one year ago is a delightful exchange, in which Mr. Cohen declares,
“Nevertheless, I am the ranking elected member from Kennebec County. (ed. He is referring to the Democratic Party) I was purged by Rita, Pat and Maggie before Pat resigned as chair. I was re-elected by Kennebec County Committee at a regularly scheduled meeting that I co-chaired as member of Platform Committee. I ran opposed by two members who were not in attendance, and who were not even nominated. Rita offered their nominations herself and asked me to leave the room for the vote. The members gave me an overwhelming majority.”
The best part of the exchange is a few more paragraphs down, and is worth a read. Mr. Cohen does a nice job with the keyboard, though I imagine the letter “f” is fading from view. (Warning: loaded with naughty words. )
Either way, it is great political theater and will certainly annoy the folks at the Collins campaign once the restrictions on primary campaigns kick-in. Of course, the Republican signatures needed to get on the ballot may be hard to come by unless you can get the names of the Ron Paul supporters.
